Dredge thought Spider said they were going to buy the kilo from the Mexicans. Not pull a fast one… It's 1977, California. Once blissed-out hippies have taken a liking to crystal meth. Punk rock is on the turntable. More than anything, misfit Dredge wants to be one of the Dead Boys, a motorcycle gang bent on controlling Santa Cruz’ growing methamphetamine trade. But first he has to impress Spider. Spider isn’t going to let anyone take over his lucrative dealing action. A drug deal with a Latino gang trying to move into Dead Boys’ turf turns into a killing spree. With long red hair, an oil-burner dope habit and a pair of earrings that look like little silver birds, Eva Braun—not her real name, of course—is Spider’s old lady. Her self-destructive streak leads her to tell the cops about the murder of four Latin gang members. Dredge would love to save Eva, but maybe he better find a way to save himself. Colleen Hayes did ten years in prison for killing her ex. With a gun in her pocket, she’s heading to Santa Cruz on a mission: to rescue her glassy-eyed daughter from the Dead Boys. Nobody crosses Spider. Not the Latinos. Not the Chinese Tong waiting to make their move. Not Dredge. Or Eva. Or Colleen. And not the little girl who lives next to the Dead Boys’ house and watches everything, especially the pretty lady with the red hair and bird earrings. Their lives are on a collision course and time is running out. Looking for the Dead Boys: She wanted justice ... and got revenge. (Not recommended for younger readers.)

Review "Set amid the world of bikers, drugs and gangs in the Santa Cruz of 1977, Max Tomlinson's spare, nihilistic, exquisitely written crime novel was one of my favorite experiences. For fans of sun-blasted California Noir in the style of Robert Stone's DOG SOLDIERS and, yes, Season 2 of TRUE DETECTIVE."Jim Thomsen, Crime Fiction Editor extraordinaire, Seattle
From the Author 'Looking for the Dead Boys' was inspired by a true story a Bay Area homicide detective told me years ago. Truth, as they say, can be stranger than fiction.
About the Author Born in the wilds of San Francisco, with its rich literary history and public transport system teeming with potential characters suitable for crime novels, it was inevitable that Max Tomlinson would become a writer. He is also kindred spirits with a dog named Floyd, a shelter-mix who stops and stares at headlights as they pass by at night. There's a story there, too. If only Floyd could talk. Then again, maybe not. Max has published four novels to date: SENDERO (listed as one of the top 100 Indie novels of 2012 by Kirkus), WHO SINGS TO THE DEAD, LETHAL DISPATCH and LOOKING FOR THE DEAD BOYS. His latest - THE CAIN FILE - an international spy thriller set in the US and South America, was selected by Amazon's Kindle Scout program for publication in 2016.*The SENDERO mysteries read as standalone novels.

By IndieHeart As a fan of Mr. Tomlinson's Sendero series, I was happy to find that I like this one just as much as I liked those books. I'm glad that he didn't suddenly adopt a cheery world view and instead stuck with what he does so well--telling a story about female heroines trying to get by in a world that is stacked against them. This novel is once again peopled by characters who are morally ambiguous at best, is well researched for the time period and setting, and rolls along with lots of action. Quite suspenseful. There were times when I literally could not put it down.
5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. "Sons of Anarchy" meets "Breaking Bad" By Herman Bubbert In his latest novel, Tomlinson proves that he can write thumping noir action as well as the political thrillers for which he's known from "Sendero," "Who Sings to the Dead," and "Lethal Dispatch." From its high-velocity beginning to its surprise ending, "Looking For the Dead Boys" spins out compelling characters and an intense plot and proves that one should never, ever get in between an enraged mother and her lost daughter. This kick-ass novel needs to be turned into a screenplay right away!

The characters--cops, bikers, the ex-con heroine, and others--run true to form. The story speeds along with a nice plot twist. Any fan of thrillers should enjoy this read.
