What would you be able to do in four seconds? Tie your shoes? Unwrap a present? Walk across a room? Could you live a lifetime in four seconds? Reading this sentence at a comfortable pace should take just about four seconds. As an athlete I had accomplished so much in my lifetime. Having reached my forties I was able to accomplish what was one of the pinnacle moments of my athletic career and I began to look back on that quest of reaching the Boston Marathon. I began to compare how that accomplishment stacked up against other accomplishments in my life. It was fun reflecting back on what I deemed to be my “signature” moments, some of which dated back to my formative years. For a brief moment in time I was at the top of the sporting universe; a Boston Marathoner. I had seized the opportunity to capitalize on a short window of time in my life to train hard and accomplish something that I could carry with me for the rest of my life and something nobody would ever be able to take away from me. Four Seconds from Boston looks at the journey that took me to the top of the mountain. Along the way there were many trials and tribulations but in the end what followed was a path to self-discovery unlike anything else in my life. What will you do with your next four seconds?

About the Author Vince Pavic has been a columnist, sports writer, teacher, trainer, human resources professional and amateur sports official. He's from Johnstown, Pennsylvania but now lives in Salisbury, Maryland with his wife and two greyhounds. FOUR SECONDS FROM BOSTON, his first book, has been called "A revealing story of how running pushes our limits, surfaces emotions we never knew of and shows us how triumphant we can be in any given moment" by Olympic Marathon Medalist Deena Kastor (2004). His editors have called it "An inspirational story that runners and non-runners will both appreciate." It's a story about running, but also, as 2008 Men's Olympic Marathon runner Brian Sell called it, "A very engaging story."

Many of them feature elite runners who make their millions in the sport. Others tell the story of people who overcome unspeakable tragedies or disabilities. Although these books are fascinating reads, unless you fall into either of those categories, they're somewhat hard to relate to. That is what sets Vince's book apart and gives it a unique perspective. Through humor, honesty and soul, he shares with us what anyone-- everyone-- who runs a marathon experiences. His voice resonates with a down-to-earth quality that makes this book a compelling read, as he successfully marries his adroitness in telling a tale with his dedication as an athlete. The result is a dynamic book not only about running but also about the human condition and how one ordinary man went about setting goals and achieving them.

By Michael Pavic's writing exposes himself as a rare, but healthy dichotomy between absurd dreamer and stark realist. As you read through the table of contents, you develop the impression this guy is insane. But as you begin to get enveloped in marathon after marathon, the reader senses the absolute realism and global perspective that Pavic has; he pulls no punches. His realism is not even necessarily about running. Rather, about stepping outside your body to find out what "stuff" you are truly made of. To find out who you truly and deeply are, right now, in the present. Few of us have the time or the guts to find out who WE are. As a non-runner, I cannot appreciate the gravity of the sheer number of miles that flippantly go by in this book; but even better, I can appreciate Pavic's message that self-awareness is a gift you give yourself upon facing and accepting life's intensifying adversities.

It is pretty real and I was amazed at the author's fortitude and determination to reach his goal. I liked the story and found it an inspiring read, especially since this is a normal guy with a normal job and family commitments rather than elite athlete with all of the time in the world to train. I didn't really get into the hockey officiating and other stuff but really found the description of the lead up races including his emotional highs and lows so familiar and relatable.
