About the Author Berk Rourke was born in Douglas, Arizona on August 28, 1938. His careers were in teaching 8th and 9th grade students initially and then as an attorney for a total of some 40 years. He began writing as a cathartic exercise and enjoyed it so much that he continued with multiple efforts now being published for the first time. His life has known very few limits and his writing in at least two genres now has not known limits yet. Give it a look.

It begins the series of the books about Josie DuPuy and her life as a police officer and her rise to police captain, but this story is certainly not exclusively about that. The story involves mystery and intrigue based on vigilantism. It's a fast read, and maybe that's because you won't want to put the book down.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. the beautiful detective of Homicide By Jean Kilczer Set in Phoenix and surrounding areas, author Berkeley Rourke gives us an in-depth look at police investigation of homicides, including the "blue wall," where police officers defend their own, and the resentment between departments that prevents them from sharing information.Rourke's knowledge of police procedure is as sure-footed as his characters, who breathe life as close as your relatives and friends. From Josie Du Puy, the beautiful detective of Homicide, whose excellent police work overcomes the force's innate discrimination against women officers and gains her the respect of her colleagues, to James Cade, the strapping Captain of the Homicide Division, a man anxious to retire but caught up in two homicides where the killers seem to have a canny understanding of police protocol. Perhaps too good for civilians. With both victims involved in narcotics, the question of a vigilante group begs inquiry.Solidly based, as are all of Rourke's novels, the murderers' motives and the tracking of their trail is sprinkled with "bread crumbs" that lead us to the killers. The story is intriguing. The characters move through it as fully-fleshed-out-people.I'm giving THIRD TIME NOT A CHARM five stars for its solid-as-bricks grounding in police procedure, an intriguing story, and characters who will hold your interest

It takes a look at what makes a killer and the influence of what we see around us. As a cop, Josie DuPuy sees a lot. When a group of murders includes a police officer, Josie already has a feeling that those behind the killings are the ones who are supposed to be on the side of the law. Several cops calling themselves The Group have turned vigilante and now Josie and her companions are on a hunt to take down The Group who doesn't seem to have a problem profiling and killing both citizens and other cops.that don't fit it to their ideal profile. This book is well written and with enough technicality to satisfy even hard core police procedure addicts. Although the book is listed as having close to 700 pages, the authors writing style makes a compelling read feel like it is too short and I am definitely looking forward to the next book in this series and following Josie DuPuy, a lady cop who knows her own mind and knows how to make others listen to what she has to say.
