Deptford, England, 1888 … Richard Stokes – one half of a tag-team carnival boxing duo – has vanished, leaving his loving wife, pugilist Eby Stokes, homeless and penniless with only questions and no answers. A mutual friend asks Holmes to look into the disappearance. Watson believes the matter to be a common case of abandonment, and Holmes’ interest merely an excuse to try his hand in the boxing booths of a visiting circus. However, when they are almost killed, Holmes and Watson’s only remaining clue to Stokes disappearance harkens back to a boxing club disbanded in shame more than sixty years earlier. Why did Stokes abandon his wife? What possible significance could the long extinct Pugilistic Club have in the matter? Who is behind the fire that almost took the lives of Holmes and Watson? Joining forces with Eby Stokes, Holmes and Watson are determined to find the answers. The kaleidoscope lights of the carnival hide many secrets, including a threat to the foundation of the British Empire. The game's afoot and, this time, it's a matter of life and death in and out of the ring…

Sherlock Holmes Blood To The Bone (Fight Card), by Mr. Andrew Salmon

Review "Salmon writes beautiful prose... but what sticks out most about this story is the lady fighter who is written as a much more complex character than Doyle usually wrote his female characters. She is strong and vulnerable, loving and vengeful, independent and a team player, and she gets an ending very deserving of her character" - The Baker Street Babes"In Blood to the Bone, Salmon tells a tale that not only would fit within the accepted canon of Holmes, but transcends pastiche and becomes a full-blooded rival to Conan Doyle's work" - I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere"The female pugilist in the tale is Eby Stokes, and while this may upset some Holmes fans, she actually comes to overshadow the great detective. There is something highly compelling in Stokes, and she simply took over the book in many ways for me" - Yorkton This Week"Blood to the Bone" is a magnificent addition to the Holmes canon and should be in the library of every Holmes enthusiast in the world. Yes, it is that good and I honestly believe Conan Doyle would have truly loved reading this book. I know I did and believe you will too.  Thanks Andrew Salmon and Fight Club. This book is a treasure." - Pulp Fiction Reviews

From the Author This one came straight from the heart as the character of Eby Stokes was based on a dear friend my wife and I lost while the tale was being written. It's immensely gratifying to see that Eby has become a hit with readers as she was a deeply personal character. The essays that accompany the tale reveal the whole story of how she came to be created. We've not seen the last of her...

By Ron Fortier Among today’s writers of New Pulp fiction, two men have risen to the top of their generation’s class in writing new Sherlock Holmes mysteries. One of these is Canadian Andrew Salmon, the other is British and I’ll let you guess at his identity. Last year, after having penned a half dozen traditional Homes and Watson tales for Airship 27 Productions best selling series, “Sherlock Holmes – Consulting Detective,” Salmon accepted an offer from Paul Bishop, the creator of the popular Fight Card series, to write a Sherlock Holmes boxing story. The result was “Work Capital,” one of the finest Sherlock Holmes tales this reviewer has ever enjoyed. That it went on to be nominated for several publishing awards came as no surprise to anyone who had had the pleasure of reading that novella. Now Salmon and the Fight Card crew have given us a sequel that is as good, if not better, than its predecessor in “Blood to the Bone.” Again, as he did before, Salmon digs deep into the history of British bare-knuckles fighting and offers up an amazing plot heavily dependent on the incredible fact that that form of pugilism was not confined to men. I had never heard of the fairer sex’s participation in this rough and tumble sport and reading through the story was truly amazed at this revelation. As he did in “Work Capital,” Salmon cleverly puts forth authentic facts and then weaves his elements of fiction around them so that the two become symbiotic. Thus leaving the reader with both having experienced a wonderful read while at the same time expanding his or her education on the history of boxing.Eby Stokes and her husband, Richard, are boxers who work for a traveling circus and often fight together in tag-team fashion taking on challengers from the audience, both men and women alike. When Richard goes missing just prior to their new engagement just outside of London, Eby seeks out the aid of Mr. Sherlock Holmes and his faithful chronicler, Dr. Watson. Watson is quick to point out that Holmes’ interest in the manly art of fisticuffs was of a scientific nature and he relished any opportunity to study the martial sport and increase his own considerable abilities in that field. In short order, Holmes and Watson find the missing boxer only to have him snatched away and murdered within a matter of minutes of their locating him. If Richard Stokes disappearance had piqued the Great Detective’s curiosity, the man’s cruel murder instantly stokes that flame into an obsessive flame. Having established a warm rapport with the lovely Eby Stokes, Holmes devotes himself to solving the murder and bringing her husband’s killers to justice. But to do so, he will have to disguise himself as a professional fighter and Eby’s new partner in the circus bouts. Something dear old Watson objects to soundly.I’ve always believed that one of the greatest challenges in writing Sherlock Holmes isn’t so much detailing his exploits and understanding Dr. Watson. All too often, less accomplished writers forget Watson is very much his own man and his relationship with the bachelor sleuth wasn’t always smooth sailing. Such is the case in this adventure and the contentious head-butting between the two companions is what makes the book especially entertaining. Salmon channels the stodgy old Afghan veteran brilliantly and in doing so brings us intimately into his tale. We are spellbound from the first page to the last.“Blood to the Bone,” is a magnificent addition to the Holmes canon and should be in the library of every Holmes enthusiast in the world. Yes, it is that good and I honestly believe Conan Doyle would have truly loved reading this book. I know I did and believe so will you too. Thanks Andrew Salmon and Fight Club. This book is a treasure.

Absolutely Marvelous By Drstatz This, to my mind, is one of the finest Holmes/Watson pastiches in my collection of better than 300 books of the genre. A statement of this nature is simply and easily made and any reading this review certainly deserve some explanations for statements this emphatic./When I sit down with the latest Homes/Watson pastiche first and foremost, I want a good solid detective story. What you would call a Friday evening with fireplace type of book. Note many books in this realm may have Hercule Poirot, Nero Wolf or many other main characters not including Holmes and Watson. In short, the tale’s the thing and I daresay that many readers who are making this particular volume their first introduction to Holmes and Watson will declare it a top-notch read. The next realm done to perfection deals with settings and environments. You are taken back to a time and place where life, especially to our twenty-first century expectations, was definitely ‘nasty, brutish and short.’ You find yourself wondering what must London have smelled like during the summer. Some writers spend too much time on environmental details; maintaining a balance where the story remains the thing takes some skill.Characters in this book represent what I call a ‘Big Picture’ approach. Often when topics of crimes come up, there may be a feeling these are committed by those in the lower reaches of society. A ‘Big Picture’ keeps readers reminded that horrific crimes and savage acts occur in the very highest reaches of society and, yes, definitely including royalty. This book deals with fighting. My perspective comes from being an active (5th Degree Black Belt) martial artist. Many consider today’s boxing, Ultimate Fighting and other realms to come under the heading of ‘Fighting.’ They do; however, martial arts systems are based upon principles of respect. Upon occasion someone would show up at the studio (I was lead instructor; it was the Grand Master’s system) loudly disclaiming he wanted to fight a black belt. We react to these individuals with respect, courtesy and a twinkle in our eyes. One, I recall, had been told to take a hike by the Kung Fu people, the Tae Kwon Do master had listened politely then simply glanced at the door and I politely informed him that no system is about simply wanting to fight. I then invited him to join us explaining new students are not permitted to do contact sparring until their second (yellow) belt. He considered this unacceptable which was how we considered him. What is addressed in this book is the exact opposite of modern—day systems complete with referees, and ring doctors empowered to stop contests immediately overruling the referee if need be. Fighting then was often to the death and any dirty trick (and tool) imaginable was freely used. Fight scenes are crafted in manners indicating the brutality and viciousness which was common. The notion of boxing being a gentleman’s sport with well-defined rules lay in the future. Stir in gambling and sometimes lavish pots to the winner and you can visualize situations where winning was the imperative thing—by any means possible. This book provided a marvelous overview of boxing of the time. The author was kind enough to provide the reader a glossary of terms and provided a brief history of some of the notable boxers (male and female) of the time. Any who are somewhat surprised that women were involved have never studied a martial art. Ladies, especially the young ones keep young men humble. One, I recall, now a pre-med student at a UC Campus, was an all-league debater, is drop-dead gorgeous and an accomplished musician. When sparring, if she indicated to a young man that he was throwing too hard, if he heeded admonitions, all was well. Otherwise his backside would immediately hit the deck.In the historical section, the book mentions that Once John L Sullivan sparred an exhibition with arguably the top woman boxer in history. He hit her too hard and she promptly knocked him cold. The Female of the Species and all that. Mr Salmon’s works are the top of the line and I anxiously await his next offerings.
