By Kindle Customer The basic premise for the series lends itself well to varied locales and interesting situations. The main character is a decent person, surrounded some some character friends, including a somewhat ninja cat belonging to his landlord.As I'm somewhat familiar with the areas written about thus far, I like that they are described accurately. They aren't just names or places pulled off a map and used as filler. Having an author write about a place you know well, and doing it right, is like having a little personal gift in the story.The stories are stand alone, but have more continuity if read as a series.

I read every word so I wouldn't miss anything.I skip when things aren't logical, suspenseful or interesting. Ms. Donald knows her natural history and human behavior wel. I appreciate that she didn't kill just to kill as anyone can do that. I kept thinking that this had to be a true story.

But it drags more than they did due to too many words devoted to describing scenery, a character’s emotions and thoughts, and backstory. Long introspective passages from the primary characters didn’t help.Rayne’s best friend Dan’s behavior throughout most of the book was annoying. Rayne describes him at one point as acting like a petulant teen instead of a grown man with responsibilities.Late in the book, Rayne and his friend in the RCMP finally ask the questions they should have asked when Rayne’s curiosity about the unsolved crime first stirred.Readers want to see the bad guy being caught. Donald doesn’t show us that, only tells us about it in a conversation between Rayne and another character.So this in some ways wasn’t really a mystery, more of a character study of the primary characters.Still, I like this series that I’ll be back for more.
