She create marvelous characters who have great adventures.If that isn't enough, she throws in twists and turns, things not being quite what they seem.It is a well crafted mix of historical facts and fictional embellishment and she does it well. Until I read the Author's note at the end, I couldn't tell you which elements were which. And it doesn't matter, because it all works.

I received as complimentary copy of this book as a part of a book tour for a fair and honest review. I rated it 4 out of 5 stars.As I started reading Quicksand by Gigi Pandian, I was somehow reminded of the beginning of the song Que Sera Sera, mostly because when I was a little girl I wanted to be a globe-trotting historian who solved mysteries and was the female version of Indiana Jones. While I became something else when I grew up, I still get to live out my fantasies through books and even though I had not read the two previous books in the Jaya Jones Treasure Hunt Mystery series, I was able to read and enjoy this book on its own. If you like quirky characters, solving mysteries and a touch of romance, then you’re going to want to read this book.Settled in San Francisco and hoping on the tenure track at a local university, historian Jaya Jones knows she should be happy but she still feels as if something is missing. When a letter with first class ticket to Paris arrives from Lane Peters, a somewhat recent fling, she’s not sure if she should go but lets her friends, and her boss, talk her into going for “research” purposes. Only when she arrives in Paris things are worse than she could have imagined and she finds herself being blackmailed into helping commit a crime.Ms. Pandian does a good job developing her characters throughout the story; I easily connected with Jaya and found her smart, funny and adventuresome, which can sometimes lead to trouble. The secondary characters were also well developed and I found Jaya’s friends colorful and a good fit for her intellect and personality (one even plays a Sitar, though she states he does it badly). While I liked Lane Peters character, and the touch of romance was nice, his past led to all sorts of issues (hello blackmail!) and I’m not sure he’ll ever be able to walk away from it.The two mysteries were well developed and took plenty of twists and turns and kept things interesting. The story’s pace was good and there was plenty of action, both verbally and physically. The villains were colorful and added just the right amount of tension to the story. I enjoyed reading Jaya’s exploits as she stumbles across clues and discoveries while trying to make sure she and Lane come out of this adventure alive and free from the police.Will Jaya uncover the mystery behind the stolen item? Will she make an important archeological discovery at the same time? You’ll have to read Quicksand to find out, I enjoyed it and plan to go back and read the previous books, Artifact and Pirate Vishnu to see what other adventures Jaya has gotten into.

Now after five months of silence, she receives a mysterious letter containing a first class plane ticket to Paris, accommodations at an upscale hotel and a note in his familiar handwriting to meet her there. Yet he’d left no instructions on how to contact him. Three days later, and against her better judgment, Jaya is headed toward Paris, where she quickly finds herself coerced into helping Lane steal something from the world’s most famous museum —the Louvre.“Quicksand”, the third book in the Jaya Jones Treasure Hunt Mystery Series is a cozy mystery full of wit and excitement. The main character, Jaya Jones, is bright, witty and ready to solve a mystery when it presents itself. Add an old flame (Lane), a determined gentleman thief (North) and a spry retired magician and you have a delightful mix of humor, intrigue and action.The mystery is quickly revealed and the pace doesn’t cease until the conclusion. The story is full of twists and turns—just when you think the ride is over, Pandian expertly shifts into another gear.Double enjoyment arrives as Pandian reveals the mystery within the mystery. Jaya, true to form, works out the clues and discovers the meaning behind the stolen item. Together with Lane and a retired magician, Jaya sets out to prevent what could be the greatest archeological theft of all time.Pandian did a wonderful job describing scenes; every sense was utilized—I could almost smell the rain on the pavement or see the hushed cool mist as it drifted across the landscape.The unique characters were well developed—from the friendly henchman to the amazingly agile elderly Frenchman. I especially enjoyed the posh and educated North—a high-end art dealer—who’s only weakness was money. He refreshingly lacked the murderous, ruthless drive of villains. Instead, Pandian created an adversary who had scruples. North never resorted to murder as a form of coercion. Instead, he forced participation by threatening to ruin reputations and careers.My only issue was Jaya’s relationship with Lane. Though I completely understood the emotional aspect, I felt she was making the wrong choice logically. I had more of a connection and respect with Sanjay than Lane, who was, in a word, a thief. Granted Lane may have “given up” his past life, but he hadn’t atoned for his wrong doings, nor did he seem inclined to voluntarily do so. It was also painfully evident his past connections would continually haunt him, antagonizing and threatening those he loved. Jaya seemed to have a strong moral compass and Lane just didn’t seem to fit.Despite my personal assessment of character relations, “Quicksand” was a thoroughly enjoyable read and one I highly recommend.NOTICE: I received an ARC directly from the author via NetGalley for an unbiased and honest review.
