Review Another suspicious death in Beauville, Massachusetts, leaves animal empath Pru Marlowe (Panthers Play for Keeps, 2014, etc.) babysitting a new kitten as she stumbles around trying to figure out who's settling old scores.The medical evidence says that David Canaday died of an acute myocardial infarction. That's not good enough for Pru, who's convinced that Ernesto Vuitton, the kitten beseeching her to play as Canaday's body cools in his kitchen, knows more than he's saying about the lawyer's death. As if on cue, Canaday's daughters, three weird sisters who might be opening a roadshow Macbeth, stir the pot of Pru's suspicions. Jill, the youngest, attaches herself worshipfully to Pru and Doc Sharpe at the County Animal Hospital, even though she's in line to inherit the bulk of her father's estate. Arriving she find a well known lawyer dead and the kitten playing with a button. Not wanting to leave the kitten alone she takes it to Wallis who was not thrilled. The kitten suffers a compulsion and Pru is worried about it. Wallis tells her he okay. The lawyer's 3 daughters are feuding over their father's death. The County hospital is in financial difficulties and close. Pru needs,to find answers to these questions. I so enjoy my visits with Wallis and Pru I brought a book that I haven't read.Full Disclosure: I received a free copy from Poison Pen Press through Netgalley for an hint review. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. They can also solve murders. Purr By Fuzzy's Mom Princess Fuzzypants here to tell you how much I enjoy the Pru Marlowe series. This latest book Kittens Can Kill, is one of the better ones. It starts with a poor little kitty who witnesses a murder. The kitten tries to tell Pru what happened but, as usual, it is not that easy. Pru always needs help from other animals to interpret what the kitten is trying to say. Her most influential assistance is her cat, naturally. I love how Wallis drips with catitude despite an evident fondness for her human companion.I don't want to spoil the book for you but if you have not yet read any of the series, give it a try. It is good reading for both human and feline.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Nonsensical By Randee Baty A mystery with talking animals. They seem to be popular these days so every so often I try one. And then remember that I don't like them. I guess I keep trying to see why they appeal to readers but I've yet to see it.Pru is an animal behaviorist that can hear what animals are saying and talk to them. She's been called in to deal with a kitten that was given to a retired lawyer as a gift and needs to be taken to the vet. When she arrives, the lawyer is dead and the kitten is playing next to him. The lawyers three daughters all get accused and, in turn, seem to accuse each other of killing him. In the end, of course, the animals provide the clues for Pru to solve the mystery.The mystery plot, taken on its own, is not bad. The book is well edited. The dialogue is believable. If you into talking animals, this will probably be ok, but I did not care for it at all. Pru is bitter and fairly unlikeable in many ways. She has a great disregard for normal human activities which reminds me of Kinsey Milhone at her worst. She seems to think that animals are smarter than people and everyone who doesn't understand them is just an ignoramus. She's dismissive of her boyfriend. I just generally didn't enjoy her character at all. But the final nail in the coffin is the way she investigates the murder. She has absolutely no standing to do so. The family doesn't ask her to. She didn't know him. She's not being accused of anything. All the normal reasons that amateurs investigate crimes are non-existent. She's just super-nosy and not in a fun way. What makes it worse is that people tell her stuff. Stuff that you would never tell a stranger. It's nonsensical.This is the fifth in a series and the first I've read so maybe that has some bearing on how ridiculous this book seemed to me but I won't be reading the others to find out. This was provided to me through Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
