Maddie Graves is returning home, and it’s under unfortunate circumstances. Following her mother Olivia’s death, someone has to take care of Maddie’s cantankerous grandmother Maude, and the family tree is almost limbless now. It’s not easy for Maddie to return to small-town life in Blackstone Bay, mostly because the boy she left behind is still there – and she’s drawn to him the second she sees him again. Nick Winters has always been in love with Maddie. At a certain point, he decided there was nothing he could do but let her go. When she returns to town after a ten-year absence, his world is upended. Maddie’s reintegration isn’t smooth, and when she discovers a dead body, all eyes are on her. Since Nick is a local police detective, he finds their lives intersecting with alarming frequency. He knows she’s hiding something, and he’s determined to find out what it is. Maddie and Nick are drawn together, but they have a few obstacles in their way – including a lifelong secret she’s kept buried: She can see and talk to ghosts. When Maddie’s life is in danger, though, Nick can’t turn away. This duo is on a collision course with the truth, and death is stalking them every step of the way. Will they get a chance to embrace destiny, or were they doomed before they ever got a chance to begin? Note: This is the first book in the Maddie Graves mystery series.

I thought I'd be getting a mixed bag of humor, romance, and suspense but what I ended up with was a whiny, immature heroine and a confused, kind of a creep hero. I honestly felt like I was reading a teen romance. Maddie acted like she was about 15. All we hear through the whole book is how beautiful she is but for some reason she can't see it. Insert eye roll here. I'm not saying she has to be vain or overly impressed with herself but please, she's supposed to be a grown woman who has dated and has had men interested in her so I found her obliviousness unbelievable and annoying. I also didn't get why she was so worried about being labelled a "freak". I mean she owns a store that is called magicks! Would anyone be surprised or really care too much that she had some psychic ability? Especially her best friend nick who was supposedly her soul mate? This isn't the 1600's I don't think you need to worry about being burned at the stake here. And why was she so scared of her own shadow. The scene where the "mean girl" comes into the salon and insults here but maddie doesn't even stick up for herself had me wanting to smack her. She's supposed to be an adult what's wrong with her? I could literally go on and on here. When she chided her grandmother for calling someone a douche because the language was offensive? Has she lived in a box her whole life? Nick wasn't as annoying but I didn't like the way he treated his girlfriend. First off it had been 10 years since he saw maddie. I mean I can see still harboring feelings but he felt way too strongly for someone he hadn't seen in that long in my opinion. Sorry but I think the relationship should've rekindled a little slower. The other supporting cast members were ok but nothing great. All IMHO of course but i really was not happy with this book.

Sure she was syrupy sweet and everyone loved her save those evil bullies. However, I couldn't feel too sorry for her because how overwhelmingly whiny and immature Maddie was. Every other sentence it was "I'm not pretty! No one likes me!" The other sentences were of others trying to tell her how much they cared for her and how beautiful she was. Of course, she was like "they're just saying that! Let me keep my head in the sand!" BARF. Was this woman 27 or 17? If I wanted to read about someone with the emotional maturity of an adolescent, I'd read a YA novel. The hero wasn't much better. He strung along his girlfriend (who, by all accounts, was a very nice lady), treated her as an afterthought, while panting after Maddie. And yes, the girlfriend was very nice but really! Have some self-respect. You follow after him like a sad puppy? Ditch that idiot to the curb. You deserve better.I liked Maddie's grandma and her hairstylist friend. I'd have enjoyed a book about those two much more than the one I tried to read.
