Flower Girl: A Burton Family Mystery, by David Marshall Hunt

About the Author David Marshall Hunt first experienced life in other countries while serving in the U.S. Air Force during the war in Viet-Nam. He was fortunate to visit numerous Asian countries and peoples before returning to the USA. Next he began a career in international banking that took him to Okinawa, Japan, Pakistan, and South Korea. Then came 30 fantastic years of university teaching and research which featured several years of life and work in Africa, the Middle-east, Asia, Canada, and the USA. An interview quoted him as saying, "I am addicted to living abroad at the expense of others, government, employers, endowed professorships, even a Fulbright Professorship in Kenya." Now as a novelist he enjoys and has fun telling tales that are often based on legends and myths about other countries, of which he has knowledge and personal experience. He admits to there being some civics lessons mixed in to the action and mystery, the risks and adventures in his stories. Old habits are hard to break, even when one is having fun. Fun is doing the things you love to do. Enjoy the wild ride!

Brunson David Marshall Hunt tells a unique and credible story in his latest novel, Flower Girl: A Burton Family Mystery. I know bad things happen all over the world but his unique take on one dark subject is unsettling yet informative. Hunt uses that darkness to weave a tale of father and daughter, with unorthodox circumstances brought on by a dangerous career. Events connect them with a credible circle of people who touch their lives along the way, helping drive the momentum of the story. I will never look at remote cabins the same way again. If you are a Tom Clancy fan, this is a book you might want to check out. If you prefer historical fiction, the research and facts woven into this plot will intrigue you.

I enjoyed his really entertaining story about the simultaneous formation of a family and a family business. But it is unlike any other family business you are likely to imagine. The family members weave in and out of a cast of characters--each one fascinating in his or her own way. It seems that characters from past novels reappear in current ones. While I was very engaged in this book and could have enjoyed reading on, I was cheered by the hint that the family business is just beginning, with more episodes to come. The book raises some interesting questions about families, academics, research, business, codes of ethics, and morality. The author walks the reader directly into one of the world's most hidden and most heinous crimes, and looks at how one family business intervenes. Let the reader be the judge. Write on, Professor Hunt!!

It is informative about the country of Korea and its history without becoming boring. It is a wake-up call about the ongoing problem of child slavery and child brides being sold without becoming preachy. But most of all it is a great story about an extended group of people and their unusual business, assassination. It is a great read, and I will be looking forward to more adventures of the Burton family.
