I don't even normally bother with any of the recipes in these cozy books, but I browsed through these, being an avid cook. I was rather shocked to read that the "fondue" recipe called for melting a few assorted blocks of cheese and that was it. Fondue is a little bit more involved than that, if it's to be even halfway decent. It's typically made with some form of Swiss cheese included, as well as butter, wine and flour, in order to keep it from being nothing more than melted stringy cheese. Fondue pots are usually kept warm with a sterno can beneath them, to keep the mixture at the best temperature for dipping. The consistency should be like a very very thick sauce, not just melted cheeses.The Chocolate mousse was similarly disappointing, as all it called for was heavy cream and melted chocolate, which is a joke. That would not give a mousse-like texture at all! I think this author would be better off to stick to writing her mysteries, than recommending recipes of this low caliber. Or at the very least, I'd suggest she test them out first on some food connoisseurs.
