The Washington Post said, “Nobody does smart, gutsy, funny, sexy women better than Susan Isaacs.” Add to that praise the adjective “strong,” and you’ve got Susan’s latest protagonist, Marianne Kent. Her life may not seem thrilling – living with her widowed mother, majoring in economics, working in an elegant dress store after classes to put away money for graduate school – but she’s determined to make a better life for herself and her mom. One night, she comes home to see the light is out again over the door. That old fuse box? Again? Except when Marianne gets inside, she stumbles over something, and it’s immediately clear what has happened: her mother has been murdered. The NYPD is stumped. Marianne’s father, an army captain, was killed in battle when she was a year old, and whatever other family she has are so distant she’s never met them. Whom can she turn to? Marianne does what strong women always do: She turns to herself. With help from her Laurie Fishbein, her BFF since second grade, she becomes her own private detective to solve the case of her lifetime.Susan Isaacs was dubbed “Jane Austen with a shmear” on NPR’s Fresh Air. Among her thirteen novels are Almost Paradise, Shining Through and After All These Years. She has written screenplays for two films, Compromising Positions (adapted from her novel) and Hello Again, as well as a nonfiction work, Brave Dames and Wimpettes: What Women are Really Doing on Page and Screen. Currently, she serves as chairman of the literary organization Poets & Writers. A member of the National Book Critics Circle, she has reviewed for New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, the Washington Post, and Newsday. She is a past president of Mystery Writers of America and belongs to the Creative Coalition, PEN, and the International Association of Crime Writers. 6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. error filled, solution is obvious early in the story By ellen foster My impression was that this author did not do her best work here. The beginning was interesting , but the solution was apparent early in the story. We were told the outcome about 2/3 into the story and the last 1/3 just fizzled out. I wonder if anyone really edited and proofed this story. There were a lot of typos. There were also some errors that may not bother some people but I found extremely annoying, The story is set in the early 1960's, but there is a character addicted to oxycontin, which did not exist then. An important part of the plot was dependant on the genetics of blood type. She said that with a mother type O (OO) and a father type AB, the baby would be AB. This is incorrect. One inherits 1 gene from each parent, so the child could be A (AO) or B (BO), but not AB. In fact if the child was type AB, then "her" mother was someone else. These are really glaring errors. I don't think an author should make these kinds of mistakes and any editor with a bit of intelligence would have caught it, along with all the typos.

Or if I may shift analogies, a slow-blooming flower where it gets richer and richer and more is carefully revealed. You can't guess. And don't want to try. I love everything I've ever read by Susan Isaacs, and yet I think I enjoyed this novella the most. Find a quiet corner this weekend for an hour or two and enjoy.

I have a feeling that this novella was written many years ago, perhaps with a view to be reworked and turned into a full length book. . The plot is simplistic, most of the questions are not answered in the end. However there is an engaging heroine and here and there one sees glimpses of the great writer Isaacs was to become.
