As Olivia has described the book - it is in the tradition of Stephen King. It is a relatively simple but awfully bleak story about ghosts, madness, death, horror, a dysfunctional family. The setting, a filthy trailer in freezing backwood mountains is frightening in itself.Carla is our heroine. She is young, poor, affected by her dysfunctional family. The description of the cold, fog, smells, sounds, and Carla's despair are graphic. It seems that Carla did not manage to eat anything during the 4 or 5 days of the story. This may have affected her judgement. Like any horror movie I was wishing that she would simply leave and never go back.Carla only seemed to get a few hours sleep near the end. I think this also affected her judgement. As a piece of writing, The Worsening is well crafted. It is a page turner. However it is definitely black and disturbing. I was reminded however that I did read Crime and Punishment years ago which I recall was similarly and famously about madness and death and equally black and disturbing.

Dark psychological horror done with a paranormal twist. Stanton uses sight, and especially smell, to transport the reader into this oh-so-painfully dark place. There was a reason Carla hadn’t seen her family for years. And after reading just a few lines of her mother’s dialogue I can see why. However, the death of Carla’s father forces her return to the family’s home on a West Virginia mountain. Abby, the mom, and Matty, the younger brother, might be two of the most unlikeable characters I’ve ever read. Carla is far too passive to deal effectively with these two crazies. Told with a multitude of flashbacks, this story is painful, sad, and brutal. The one ray of light is Carla’s memories of her father, MJ. However, even those bright recollections are darkened by his recent death. There is little happiness in this novel. This is pitch black, slow-building, inescapable terror. Stanton writes it very well. I can only hope a sequel is forthcoming. A return to the mountain is needed, for what happened there needs to be vindicated. An excellent book, just don’t expect to smile.

No matter how well we mask the parts of our lives we try to forget, during times of great distress, these turn into monsters and attack. In The Worsening, Carla is about to go through a personal Hell, and she has a lot to lose. With dread and ominous fog enveloping her, Carla must survive her past, which refuses to let go. Beware, this on many ways, is a shocking horror story, literally and figuratively.-CJZisiA more complete review will appear on my blog zisiemporium.blogspot.com soon
