As good as Christie's Marple mysteries, any day By Ian Mathie It is said that a novel needs to start with something dramatic and gripping to get the reader’s attention. Well, the jaws of a giant alligator snapping shut on a body floating in a nature reserve pond certainly did that for me, and the story that followed kept me reading all night.Jeanne Meekes has a habit if crafting superb stories out of mundane situations and then complicating them with human perfidy. I’m not suggesting an alligator chomping a body is mundane, but things have to start somewhere. As the news breaks that a body has been taken, the alligator needs a strong and diligent advocate if he is to avoid being hunted down and killed, because that’s what happens most often in that part of Florida where wildlife is only accepted on strictly human terms.A feisty retired widow, living in an upmarket gated sporting community, who is a volunteer at the nature reserve is Big Joe’s champion. She proves diligent and resourceful both in finding out pertinent facts and in rousing support from the tennis team friends and others in the local area. She’s also not afraid to put herself in the line of fire to defend her reptilian hero.Blending together intrigue, nosiness and pure determination not to waste the life of a magnificent animal with the social activities of the tennis team and their opponents in a local geriatric league, Meekes’s story is every bit as good as one of Agatha Christie’s Marple mysteries. Set in the real, if slightly artificial, world of prosperous retired Florida, it is easy to read and understand, yet full of interesting twists and surprises. She uses her comprehensive understanding of human weaknesses to provide story lines anyone can relate to, which keep the reader turning pages right to the end. Some of these even have happy endings, but grit and perseverance are the true victors.Gator Bait is a delightful book which is well worth reading. I can see an interesting series growing out of this, and look forward to seeing what the ladies of the tennis team get up to next.

Great Start To A New Series By Evelyn Cullet This first novel in the Paradise Palms Tennis Team series sets the tone for more wonderful stories to come. Packi is an enjoyable character to read. She has the same problems and insecurities as many women do at her age, so she's not perfect. And her teammates are much the same. The setting is so well-described, you can picture Big Joe, the alligator, swimming in the pond at the nature preserve with only his eyes and snout above the water line. Kind of ominous. And just when you think the suspense is over, it starts again. This story kept me turning pages well into the night. An excellent first novel in the new series. I'm sure you'll enjoy reading it as much as I did.

By Patricia Hackel The first couple of chapters had me reluctantly thinking that the book was going to be all about saving an alligator. However, reading on, suddenly had me not wanting to put the book down. I loved the characters, the mystery, and hated to see it end. I am looking forward to reading future stories in this series. Jeanne Meeks is a terrific author and has a knack for helping the reader envision each scene with her descriptive ability.
