If I had to read the words "and Manhattan danced on" once more I would have given this one star By Manly Reading There is a shadow over this book, and its not Fu Manchu - its that damn phrase set out in the header. Rohmer may have been thoroughly sick of writing the good Doctor by now, but that doesn’t excuse beating me over the head with a catchphrase for 250 pages.Anyway. This is the 9th or 10th book in the Fu-Manchu series that was always intended to be a trilogy. But the public loved Fu Manchu, and had generally lukewarm feelings about Rohmer's non-Fu Manchu stuff, so he went where the money was and wrote more Fu Manchu, starting in about 1930. I think he also later moved to New York, and started setting his books there - either to break into the US market, or to cement his position there, if I had to guess (and I do). I've already established that dancing Cold War Manhattan is not quite as atmospheric as pre-war London, and most of this book is in more like a pure spy story than the usual adventures involved with Fu Manchu. Also, our hero is solely Sir Nayland Smith - and he must be in his 70's by now. At least - which makes the series just that bit harder to all hang together. Finally, the villain here is not really Fu Manchu, but the USSR: Fu Manchu is a third party, really - and, in fact, more than being a noble adversary he's actually the good guy this time around. I don’t think he kills anyone at all during the course of the story. And there is no sign of Peko the Marmoset, after he was the driving McGuffin of the previous "Island of Fu Manchu".Be aware this is a different Fu Manchu story, lacking a lot of the drive and dark charm of the early tales of "the devil doctor" (but to be fair, probably a lot less racially offensive - for all that Fu Manchu was in fact always a very honourable adversary). Its OK, but not a patch on those early stories. For the first time I'm not looking forward to seeing what the next novel in the series is like - I'll read it, but I don’t have high expectations any more.

An Energy Weapon And A Race To Own It Suspense Thriller By VicG Sax Rohmer in his book, “The Shadow of Fu-Manchu” Book Eleven in the Dr. Fu-Manchu series published by Titan Books brings us new adventures of Sir Denis Nayland Smith and, of course, the evil Dr. Fu-Manchu.From the Back Cover: “Imagine a person, tall, lean, and feline, high-shouldered, with a brow like Shakespeare and a face like Satan…”World War II has ended. The United States is locked in a Cold War with the Eastern Bloc. It’s the time of mutually assured destruction, yet the atomic bomb isn’t the only weapon to fear. And the Soviets have another enemy with whom to contend.Fu-ManchuDr. Morris Craig has developed an energy weapon with the potential for unlimited destruction—whoever controls it could tip the balance of global power. The quest for Craig’s invention once again brings Fu-Manchu to New York City, his mission to prevent the Communists from acquiring the device. But who can keep it out of the hands of the Devil Doctor himself?Dr. Morris Craig has developed a new energy weapon, a kind of disintegrator that can also be used as a potential source of limitless energy. And now the game begins. Not only does Fu-Manchu want it for himself he also does not want anyone else to have it. “The Shadow of Fu-Manchu” is a thriller as almost everyone’s life is in great peril. Mr. Rohmer writes in a breathless style that will keep you on the edge of your seat, flipping pages as fast as you can read them just trying to keep up with a runaway roller coaster ride story. There is plot, action, a cliffhanger, out of danger, more plot, more action then another cliffhanger all throughout the book. This is one super exciting book. “The Shadow of Fu-Manchu” is the perfect read to get your adrenalin going and root for the good guys to conquer a menace that is almost supremely evil. This is a high-octane series and I am so glad that Titan Books is bringing the whole series back. I am really looking forward to reading the next book in this series.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Titan Books. I was not required to write a positive review.
