She spends her days teaching mindfulness techniques to hospital patients, helping them eliminate stress and pain from their lives. But for psychologist Dr. Lou Ann Dryden, a state of Zen is near impossible to find.
Between work politics, pesky bosses, and a complicated family life, Lou would love to turn inward to find a calm and happy place—but every day it seems like something or someone else is prepared to stand in her way.
Now, at her second job as a consultant to the local police department, it’s an unsettling child abduction case that’s harshing Lou’s mellow. Her mission: to narrow down the suspect pool in the kidnapping of a nine-year-old girl, with the help of her quirky police chief cousin and a good-guy ex named Jeep.
When a series of interviews seem to be getting her nowhere at all, it only adds to Lou’s frustration, as a child’s life lies dangerously in the balance. But just when it looks like the creep might get away with it, Lou finds herself a target of the very bad guy she’s after—and quickly promises he’ll regret the day he ever underestimated her.

This book speaks to a sense of time and place that we all have in our memories. We know these characters or someone just like them. We speak their language, understand their families and laugh at the jokes. Yet it goes beyond the small towns of the midwest into a darker, scarier place where one really looks for a heroine. We need the good guys in our lives. Go Dr. Dryden!

Her private practice and the idiots who are in charge, a love life that just might take off, and a consulting gig with the local police on a child abduction case. The protagonist balances all three just well enough to keep you on edge.I found this book enjoyable to read, although it’s not the genre I would normally find myself. The pacing was just right to make me want to pick it up again every time I was around my Kendell. The central character seems well developed. The supporting cast not as well, we don’t really get to know any of them too deeply, including Jeep the potential love interest. We only seem to get to know him well enough to know that he’s hurt our hero in the past, and is possibly not that person any more. What’s high school for, if not developing some of the stupid you’ll then learn to exercise when you get to college. The psychological insights were interesting, without being too clinical or boring. The descriptions of her surroundings and the events were always detailed in a pleasant and informative way. There is nothing that would keep me from recommending this book to any of my friends.

The plot lines are different from anything you'd expect to find in Chandler's work, but like Chandler, the author really succeeds in highlighting the complexities of good, evil and other imperfections in human nature: you can have sympathetic, likable characters (like some of Dr. Dryden's patients) who are obviously not saints, but instead, reliable sinners who try to do the right thing, who (although products of their environment) recognize or are open to a need to take responsibility for their actions, or whose character flaws have overtaken only one aspect of their lives, leaving them to aspire to good in other aspects. And similarly imitating reality, there are other characters whose fundamental direction is evil, who are self-centered, or who want to see others fail-- just because. And it makes for a better story, art imitating nature and all.Like the Raymond Chandler mysteries, expect a quick, brain-candy read. Unlike Chandler's works, Dr. Dryden is much more introspective and a little less sure of herself than Chandler's hero, Marlowe. Debated between a 4-star review and a 5-star review, ultimately going for the 5 because Dr. Hubert (the author)'s characters highlight complex realities of human nature that are glossed over or ignored in many other books. Weighing in favor of 4 starts, I would have hoped for a little clue to the twist to Dr. Dryden's way out of the tough spot she finds herself in at the novel's climax. I look forward to future Dr. Dryden mysteries with more character development for Jeep and the Dryden family, perhaps even peace or solace for her cousin Cheryl and childhood friend Sissy.
