3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A book I'd read again! By Helen Treharne It's been a while since I gave five stars to a book but this definitely ticks all my boxes. It's a great thriller/suspense that kept me turning the page as soon as I picked it up. I started it in an evening and finished it by the following lunchtime.Kellie Lawson Murphy gets straight to the action with this one. The book kicks off with Leo Spradlin, a convicted rapist and murdered being released from prison. He's been on death row for a series of offences against college girls at Blue Hill College, Washington. Branded "The Co-Ed Killer" everyone is convinced of his guilt. That is until DNA evidence overturns his conviction and he is pardoned.Mike Cancini, the detective responsible for putting him away, is convinced that he has the right man and sets out to prove himself right. A cast of characters join the journey, including a journalist from The Washington Herald chasing the story of a lifetime. Is the DNA evidence right? Is Leo Spradlin as manipulative as he seems and if so, what does that mean? All is revealed in a story that is well paced and intriguing, leaving questions answered and a fully formed character in Cancini, ripe for development in future stories.But enough of what it's about! Why did I like it? Firstly, I just like Kellie's style. You get a sense of the horror and violence of the crimes (both past and a few more!) without going into lots of gory detail - that's a difficult line to navigate when it comes to sexual assault. Secondly, the book is incredibly well paced - the chapters are short and driven along by each being written from different point of views. This is handled very well. Shifting POVs can cause confusion and slows place but this is really well done. Thirdly, there is just the right amount of exposition to get the reader up to speed with the previous "Co-Ed crimes" without being bogged down in narrative. Finally, the characters are well developed without providing lots of unnecessary detail and inner monologue.In short, this is definitely a book I would pick up and read again. An ideal one to take for your summer holidays if you like a good crime read by the pool!

I couldn't put the book down and ended up burying my head in the book, missing a day and a half of my beach vacation. The pace of the story moved quickly and the plot kept me guessing. The chapters ended with new developments and cliffhangers, compelling me to keep reading. The subject of a serial rapist and killer being released from prison and crimes beginning again on the same college campus made for suspenseful reading. I give it an enthusiastic thumbs up! Looking forward to Detective Cancini's next case.

It’s a small town and the conviction rang true, way back when, and a little matter of changing evidence isn’t going to change people’s minds. They know who the guilty party is.Detective Michael Cancini is devastated to see this old case fall through: it was a seriously dark case, involving the years-ago deaths of five young women. New evidence came to light, and it changes everything…and unknown to him, a young reporter, Julia Manning, has also decided to investigate.Eerily, we can see into the minds of all three: the two ‘on the case’ as well as the killer. Ms. Murphy presents these viewpoints skillfully, and we slowly begin to puzzle out this crime, both from the strictly evidence-collected side, as well as from the motivation side. We also get a strong sense of public opinion; a sense of the fear running through the small town. There were the rapes and murders and now there might be… revenge? The possibility of revenge amps up what is already an eerie mystery to one more fitting in the ‘thriller’ category.The forensic evidence, faults with DNA testing, and what caused the re-examination of evidence is thoroughly discussed, in an interesting and informative way. Fans of the facts-based contemporary mystery/whodunits will really enjoy the discussions focused on forensics. The case doesn’t dwell long on forensics though; various characters carry the story forward at speed. The local barkeep knows everyone, or he knows someone who knows someone. Regular old gossips supply some information, too. There’s a real sense that everyone’s business is known and discussed, but for some things… it’s not.The author’s maddeningly casual approach to pronouns makes you guess about who is meant, on occasion. It wouldn’t be so irritating if the story weren’t so riveting! However, it’s a small complaint, in an otherwise well-plotted, well-written mystery.
