He's a hero to many but yet has personal struggles because of his choices to put himself and family second to helping others. I think this book showed more of his vulnerability but also how much his "other family" also plays a big role in shaping who he is. Even when his marriage struggles, he learns he is not alone and will always have the brotherhood/sisterhood of fire fighters behind him. I think he's also been able to discover what's most important in his life in regards to Valerie and will work harder to keep that relationship alive.

The author has built the main characters of the story very nicely over the previous books and once I picked the book and started reading I wanted to know more about each one of them. The author does a good job of summarizing episodes from previous books so even though I did not remember some of the quoted episodes, the summary fit perfectly and blended with the current story. The book has new, unexpected to me, developments and kept my interest all the time. I really, really enjoyed reading this book.

Jack has made mistakes and there have been some tragic consequences. But Jack is also funny and charming - and his friends and neighbors seem like my own friends and neighbors. As with his other novels, the author creates a strong sense of place where outsiders might not be welcome and I might even feel right at home.
