Everyone in Painters Mill knows the abandoned Hochstetler farm is haunted. But only a handful of the residents remember the terrible secrets lost in the muted/hushed whispers of time―and now death is stalking them, seemingly from the grave. On a late-night shift, Chief of Police Kate Burkholder is called to the scene of an apparent suicide―an old man found hanging from the rafters in his dilapidated barn. But evidence quickly points to murder and Kate finds herself chasing a singularly difficult and elusive trail of evidence that somehow points back to the tragedy of that long ago incident. Meanwhile, Kate has moved in with state agent John Tomasetti and for the first time in so long, they're both happy; a bliss quickly shattered when one of the men responsible for the murders of Tomasetti's family four years ago is found not guilty, and walks away a free man. Will Tomasetti be pulled back to his own haunted past? When a second man is found dead―also seemingly by his own hand―Kate discovers a link in the case that sends the investigation in a direction no one could imagine and revealing the horrifying truth of what really happened that terrible night thirty-five years ago, when an Amish father and his four children perished―and his young wife disappeared without a trace. And, as Kate knows―the past never truly dies . . . in The Dead Will Tell by Linda Castillo

The Dead Will Tell: A Kate Burkholder Novel, by Linda Castillo

From Booklist Sometimes, setting mirrors action in crime fiction, but other times, the beauty or tranquility of a landscape serves to heighten the horror of the crimes that unfold against it. Such is certainly the case in Castillo’s Kate Burkholder series, starring the police chief of Painters Mill, Ohio, seemingly a near-bucolic community set in the midst of Amish country. In this sixth installment, Kate must connect the dots linking a horrendous 1975 robbery-gone-wrong (reminiscent of In Cold Blood)—an Amish man was killed, four of his children died in a fire, and his wife disappeared—and a string of 2014 murders suggesting that the victims may have been involved in the decades-old crime. But why has the revenge-fueled killer waited so long to begin extracting his or her pounds of flesh? Castillo effectively combines an airtight plot with a revealingly complex look at what can happen when a fissure develops along the fault line separating an insular community from the secular world. As always, the introspective but determined Kate straddles both worlds with remarkable dexterity. Castillo shows again why the phrase “gritty Amish mystery” is no oxymoron. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: The Kate Burkholder series has steadily grown in popularity, turning up recently on the New York Times best-seller list. An aggressive marketing campaign, combining national trade exposure as well as library and social media, will help ensure that it stays there. --Bill Ott

A string of murders is somehow connected to a horrific thirty-five year old unsolved crime. Could the victims be seeking revenge? I loved the ghost story element in this book (although I quickly realized that ghosts don't leave footprints). Every time I thought I had things figured out, there were twist and turns in the plot that completely surprised me.There is unrest between Kate and Tomasetti that added some angst to the overall story, but the outcome of their conflict is so worth it. In addition to the gruesome murders both past and present, Painters Mill is besieged by a deluge, and the cold and damp of the ceaseless rain adds a gloomy element to the story. The conclusion of the novel was far more twisted than I could have predicted and getting there was ever so much fun.

Bowles Linda Castillo continues to meet her readers' high expectations in this latest installment of the Kate Burkholder series. The beloved heroine returns, called to the scene of what is initially thought to be a suicide...but quickly is concluded to be something else entirely. The death of a second man leads Kate to look for connections between the two...and she finds them. Her investigation takes her back decades....to the heinous deaths of an Amish family. How is it all connected? And who is responsible? Someone is seeking vengeance for old tragedies and injustice....and eventually we will all pay.A complete and utter page turner........with the requisite twist that we have come to anticipate from Castillo. The inability of the reader to put it down makes the novel and incredibly quick read....not to be missed!!DYB

By Jim Munchel THE DEAD WILL TELLBy Linda CastilloHere is the best thriller scoop I can give anyone who loves the literary pursuit of solving crimes. The list for fictional crime writers is currently vast and extremely crowded. When it comes to the ladies of the genre there are a few non-negotiable. In no particular order the crème de la crème is Laura Lippman, Lisa Unger, Karin Slaughter and Linda Castillo. Dark, gritty (What the hell does gritty actually mean when describing a noir) and certifiably addictive. The for mentioned ladies cast a spell on their readers will words rather than incantations.THE DEAD WILL TELL is the latest Kate Burkholder thriller set in the world of the Amish. What began with SWORN TO SILENCE a few years ago and I must tell this quick story. I had a copy of SWORN TO SILENCE in my carry on and I was flying to Denver, Colorado for a social visit. For some unknown reason I was bumped from my flight and I could not get another one for six grueling hours. I was so glad I had Kate Burkholder to keep me company. I had the entire novel finished before my new flight left the runway. Of course, I had nothing to read during my flight. That is an example of a sure fire storyteller.Thirty-five years ago the night was shattered by cries of torment in the town of Painters Mill, Ohio. An Amish family is robbed at gunpoint, the father is murdered, and the house ablaze and four small children perish. The sobbing mother is taken by masked now killers and never seen ago. The only survivor is a fourteen year old boy who escaped trying to save his siblings. The fire destroys the farm and leaves behind the ashes of an innocent family scattered to the quiet Ohio wind.Secrets lay dormant for many years until the serene town of Painters Mill erupts with the brutal hanging of one of the perpetrators from that night many years ago. Soon death visits the town again with another murder of a prominent citizen plagued by dreams of guilt from that night. Has a ghost returned to exact vengeance on those doomed to suffer for their sins? It is up to the ingenious mind of head of police Kate Burkholder to gather all the information to solve the murders. She is met with much unkindness and distrust from the Amish in the community since she abdicated from the Amish faith and ways many years before.Ms. Castillo cannot write these thrillers fast enough for me. The pages actually fly ( I kid you not) once you open her books. Allow yourself as a reader to be drawn into the world of the innocent and not so innocent.Jim Munchelhttp://nostranger2fiction.com
