Aimee Machado is thrilled to be starting her first job as a forensic librarian at the medical center in the town of Timbergate, north of Sacramento, California. Her ebullient mood is somewhat dampened by her recent breakup with her former live-in boyfriend, Nick Alexander. And then there's a little matter of murder: on Aimee's first day on the job, a body is found in the hospital Dumpster, soon identified as her supervisor’s wife, Bonnie Beardsley. Aimee’s heartbreaker of a brother and best friend, Harry, just happens to be one of the last people to see Bonnie alive, but he is hardly the only suspect. Bonnie was notorious for her wild partying and man-stealing ways, and she has left a trail of broken hearts and bitterness. Aimee is determined to get her brother off the suspect list. Aimee's snooping quickly makes her a target. Isolated on her grandparents' llama farm where she fled post-breakup, she realizes exactly how vulnerable she is. Three men have pledged to protect her: her brother Harry, her ex, Nick, and the dashing hospital administrator with a reputation for womanizing, Jared Quinn. But they can’t be on the alert every minute, not when Aimee is so bent on cracking the case with or without their help. Book 1 of a new series featuring amateur sleuth Aimee Machado.

She is living in a converted bunkhouse above her grandparents’ barn because she’s broken up with her boyfriend and still has graduate school loans to pay off. But this new job is just what she needs. Everything is going well until her boss’ wife is found murdered and her brother, Harry, becomes the prime suspect. Aimee will do anything to save her brother.Aimee is young and inexperienced, but she is also very determined. Not only does she care about her brother, but also she feels responsible for the fact that he is the main suspect. The police investigator, Marco Bueller, is determined to pin something on Harry because Harry had stopped Marco’s brother, Tango, from raping Aimee, resulting in Tango being sent to prison. While Marco isn’t in charge of the investigation, he is influencing Connie Keefer, the DA. Aimee is sure that no other suspects are even being considered, so she starts investigating. While this is a fun cozy mystery, I wish that the characters had more depth. It took me quite awhile to get hooked into this story and I’d figured out much of the mystery early on. There were a lot of details that I didn’t know, but it wasn’t hard to figure out the bad guys. In addition, lots of action is just reported after the fact. It would have been nice to experience more of it.The final capture is dramatic, with good tension and excitement. I also loved all the animals, especially the llamas, the cat, Fanny, and the cockatiel, Bosco. I never realized that llamas were such good watch animals.Fans of the cozy mystery will enjoy watching Aimee as she hunts for clues and suspects, putting herself in danger, as she works to uncover the truth.originally posted at long and short reviews

A Locally Flavored Mystery By George Parker A while ago, I was reading one of Sue Grafton’s ‘Alphabet Mysteries’ and was impressed with the manner in which Grafton fictionalized a real but small SoCal town as the setting of her series. I have really come to love the NorCal California town I live near, Redding, and I became convinced that Redding would make a good setting for a novel series.Sharon St. George has done it.Due for Discard is St. George’s debut mystery novel, and it is set in the town of Timbergate, California. Timbergate is the largest town between Sacramento and the Oregon border. Timbergate is on the Sacramento River. Timbergate has very hot summers, and a suburb to the east with llama ranches. Sounds like Redding. Looks like Redding. And this is a good thing.Due for Discard begins on the first day of a new job for Aimee Machado. Aimee is a Timbergate native recently home from college armed with a library science degree from a Connecticut university. Aimee has been hired by a local hospital to be its pioneer ‘forensic librarian’. Trouble starts from Aimee’s first day. An influential local woman has gone missing over the weekend. A ‘missing person’ case turns to homicide when the missing woman’s body is discovered. The situation turns personal for Aimee when her brother is named as the prime suspect.Due for Discard is a well-paced, entertaining novel with interesting and believable characters. It touches on contemporary race issues. Aimee Machado is of Portuguese and Chinese ancestry, and even though she is a Timbergate native, sometimes she is still treated as an outsider in the predominantly white community. I look forward to seeing how St. George develops this theme over the series.I had the most fun with this novel trying to imagine what the real world counterparts might be to St. George’s fictional locations. I think I was able to identify many of them. For instance, two characters traveled from Point A (a local hospital) to Point B (lunch by the river) and they went to a fast food drive thru while getting from A to B. I could tell what drive thru they had to have used! Not all of the fictional places have real world counterparts, however. Timbergate is Sharon’s town, after all.Due for Discard is outside of my typical reading tastes. It is a mystery, which I do read, with a touch of romance, which I don’t. Fashion descriptions are no so nearly complete in books I normally read as they are in Due for Discard…but that’s okay. It fits here, and works well. The mystery and the local setting kept me turning pages to the end. I also tend to be a reading polygamist, juggling several books at once and eventually working my way through them all. It was easy to stay true to Due for Discard for the duration, and I finished the book wanting more. I am looking forward to the rest of the series.

The story begins with Doolittle, the llama. I was not familiar with these animals but after reading this book, I feel more comfortable around them, since there is a very shaggy llama in the pasture near my home. The book's setting is in a hospital and library, another area I am not too familiar with. However, I now have new insight into the workings of a medical center. What I'm saying is that after reading Due for Discard, I am more informed about many aspects of life that I had not experienced before. As for Aimee Machado, I can relate to many of her thoughts and concerns, as we both share the advantages and obstacles of being Eurasian. The difference is that Aimee has moxie! She is relentless in her quest to clear her brother Harry of the murder of Bonnie Beardsley. This is an exciting mystery novel. I was enthralled throughout the book and eagerly look forward to Aimee's next adventure.
