By Shea Heaver ....if you do, I'd like to give you a quick rundown on Kevin Kruse's book about managing all 1440 of them each and every day. That "powerful" 1440 number as Kruse puts it, is the basis for Chapter 1 of this fascinating read which makes you really think about how to maximize the use of your time with meaningful and personal strategies, tips and techniques throughout the remaining pages. The book is very well researched and (as with his other books on 'Employee Engagement') is constructed in an easy-to-read manner that helps you really get what he is saying.Kruse doesn't ask the reader to throw out everything they ever read, thought or did to manage their time. Instead he simply challenges some existing mindsets (e.g. using laptops to take meeting notes) while adding many new ideas and suggestions from his own experience and those of highly successful people. The book is littered (particularly later on) with anecdotes and advice from those who have excelled in their field whether it's sports, business or academics. There are hacks and myth-busters, humorous interjections (such as not having to visualize his beer belly), secrets, tips and "How does this apply" sections that all provide valuable insight and thought-provoking recommendations.Whether he's advising on how to time-block your day, why trying to multitask is a bad idea (and it is) and finally putting it all together in the E-3C system, you will put this book down with a fresh vision and vigor on how to better manage your time.Perhaps the best testament I can give Kevin's book is that I intend to read it again in 3-4 months, eager to see just how much of it I have put in place during my 1440 minutes each day.

Dickinson Much has been written over the past one hundred years on the topic of time-management, procrastination and motivation, the very best of which would require the average reader several years to ingest (let alone digest and implement). Kruse’ 15 Secrets Successful People Know About Time Management covers most of the same ground within a single volume, can be completed in a single session (if smartly scheduled), thus allowing the busy entrepreneur sufficient time to do what needs to be done. And whereas not all successful business tycoons have attended (or at least remained long enough to graduate) the London School of Economics, Harvard, or Yale, the readers of this book can all gain for themselves a life-long association with MIT (each of us learning about our very own Most Important Task). Whether due to a lack of motivation, procrastination, or any other factors (real or imagined), in Kruse’ own words: “Put simply, the most important things are to know what to focus on and how you are going to get it done. I call this always knowing your most important task, or MIT“ (p22, epub vers). Indeed, the fact that you are reading this review (and thus presumably considering reading the book), your own MIT syllabus would surely help you achieve your goals more quickly, this book containing essential reading material for inclusion within your busy calendar/schedule, rather than its simply being added to your ‘to-do’ list.Gathering his information from eminently relevant sources (as partly detailed in the subtitle), Kruse’ book glistens throughout from its gems of easily digestible soundbites of savvy-wisdom from the successful. Certainly a great structural format for those preferring not to sit through hours and hours of lectures (as so many a guru’s volumes sometimes really turn out to be), each chapter of ‘15 Secrets …’ presents only a poignant vignette or two, with additional short, sharp, self-explanatory sections subtitled ‘In their own words’, ‘Research says…’, and ‘How does this apply if you’re a(n) .…[Entrepreneur, Exec, ….. student, parent]’. Each chapter also concludes with a ‘Free Bonus’ reference to an additional online resource from the author. Written in a readily accessible style, most chapters also include fun/quirky factoids of leadership personality activities, e.g., that Steve Jobs evicted meeting participants who were unable to state why they were in attendance, or that George Bush won a bet having read 95 books in one year (tho’ we did not also learn those book’s titles !).Succinctly covering 17 short core chapters, the first 15 cover each of the 15 secrets, the next few suggesting further tips and how they might be combined into a ready-usable ‘system’ (which Kruse calls “E-3C” for Energy, Capture, Calendar & Concentrate), which will differ in detail according to our different preferred lifestyles and circumstances. Following this section is reported discourse relating to some of the most critical content extracted from the interview data relating the time-management confessions/secrets of the billionaires (a success hit-rate of 25% from those Kruse had approached), professional athletes, star students, and entrepreneurs (presented in alphabetical order), and are covered in Chs 18-21 respectively. As such, this book provides a valuable one-stop-shop of optimal time-management advice for professional success, whether the reader be a budding entrepreneur, or anyone else seeking advice in pursuit of their success within their eduventure(s) in whatever chosen field(s) of exploration, ….. if then put into practice, both repeatedly and consistently. This reviewer’s own practice is to read at least 10-20 books on any given subject in order to better grasp its depths, but if you’re looking for a single book to help you master time-management for enhanced practical efficiency on a daily basis, this it.Dr. Anthony R. Dickinson [President, Hong Kong Society of Counseling and Psychology, and Research Advisor, Beijing Genomics Institute, China], Oct, 2015.NB: Text as supplied in epub format (pp 409), following review request from the author, Sept, 2015.
