In 1985, Detective Jerrod Gold -- a talented, but idealistic young police investigator in a small California agricultural community – is tasked with the investigation of a series of heroin-related deaths. Gold becomes increasingly disillusioned as his traditional-style investigation is hampered by uncooperative witnesses, dead-end leads, and interference from his superiors. Gold finds inspiration from three improbable sources to formulate an unusual and dangerous plan – part Dirty Harry and part Ferris Bueller's Day Off – designed to expose those responsible for the deaths. Gold recruits an eclectic cadre of fellow police officers and civilians to implement his high-risk and blatantly unauthorized plan.

By PanamaRod PanamaRod says: I just finished reading "Crush the Wicked" by novice author, James C. Gray. It was excellent. It was a refreshing take on the work of a real life detective. Unlike the hard-boiled PI heroes of the genre's past like Sam Spade and Phillip Marlowe or even the willy nilly Magnum who were untethered by political restraints, Gray’s small town sleuth, Jerrod Gold, had to weave through an obstacle course of officialdom, bureaucracy, critical media limelight and adverse public opinion in order to get results. Mr. Gray's description of the small California town of Valle Verde was so vivid you could picture yourself in your mind standing in front of the Police building at Fremont and First and smell the tantalizing aroma of chili coming from the nearby building of The Corner hotdog emporium. But his knowledge garnered from twenty-five years of law enforcement was even more obvious with his expert descriptions of police procedure including investigation, interrogation, clue detection and lab forensics. It was like watching Blue Bloods meets Sherlock Holmes meets CSI. It was a well-paced detective novel with the second half so fast I couldn't put it down and stayed up well past my bedtime to finish it.

You can tell that it is written from an experienced professional's point of view. The whole thing is a ode to what he knows and knows well.I recognized a lot of my hometown in the city this novel takes place in and I am sure this was intended. I don't want to spoil anything for the reader so I will leave that up to interpretation. What a great first effort- I cannot wait to read more from James Gray.
