Review Publisher's Weekly Starred ReviewLister provides a plausible backstory for his unusual clergyman sleuth in the seventh John Jordan mystery (after 2014's Rivers to Blood), a prequel. When Jordan was 12, in 1980, he encountered Wayne Williams, the man who would be publicly identified as the Atlanta Child Murderer. After high school, Jordan moves to Atlanta, where he focuses on the murder of a boy who wasn't on the official list of Williams's victims. Lister gives fair clues for the surprise solution, thus combining a compelling account of his hero's spiritual struggle with a top-notch whodunit.

There are, however, few great ones that must be read. "Innocent Blood" by Michael Lister is at the top of the "must read" list. His character development running alongside his plot development keeps you turning page after page. For those who have read other of his books in the John Jordan series, this will fill in the back story, the early years of John Jordan. We all are products of our DNA, but are also shaped by our inner thoughts that never leave our mind. Young John Jordan is driven by both after a random encounter with the serial killer targeting the children of Atlanta. As the story progresses you are pulled towards various characters. Some good, some not so good. The twists and turns keep you guessing as to who is really good and who is not. Enjoy this book, It's like smoking a good cigar, drinking a perfect martini, or.....well, whatever you want to add to that list. Just add this book to your "must read list."

Columbus If you’re a fan of Michael Lister’s John Jordan series, then you will enjoy the glimpse into his very beginnings here. If you’ve never read a John Jordan novel before, this may be the perfect jumping on point. Either way, this is one powerful mystery novel. I love mysteries and have been reading them for many years, but I must admit that I never saw the ending coming here. You can read the synopsis of the story in the book description, but essentially it deals with John Jordan believing that the man convicted of The Atlanta Child Murders, may not have been responsible for all of the children killed. As always, the humanity of the characters really shines through in this book. In fact, that’s what makes people fall in love with the John Jordan novels. Michael Lister doesn’t simply create characters to move the plot along, he infuses them with complex thoughts and feelings and by the time you’ve finished reading, you recall them with emotion. Like any Beatles album, there is no filler here. Every chapter is vital and propels the narrative along. As I was nearing the end, I was pretty sure I had figured out who the murderer was, but should have known better. The revelation is a true shocker, but not in a cheap or ridiculous sense. The conclusion is actually believable and surprising, no easy feat in these days of grandiose plot twists. Mr. Lister has been writing for many years and the benefit of that experience is clearly on display in this masterwork of a novel.

Michael Lister has blended fact and fiction in this great thriller. It takes the reader through twists and turns while John solves his first murder. As with all of Michael's books, this one has an unexpected ending. If you are looking for a good page turner don't miss this one.
