Smith A young man on a walking tour stops at a decrepit country inn only to find that a childhood friend is spending the night there as well. The friend explains that he is there to meet his twin brother. Next morning the man finds his friend murdered, and the surly hotel staff nowhere in sight. After walking to the nearest town to report the murder to the friend's fiancee, he is not believed because she claims to have spoken to the man in question earlier that morning - what's more, the old inn has been abandoned for years! She also tells him that the other brother is living in Paris, and not in the neighborhood at all. Suspecting foul play, the main character begins investigating on the assumption that his friend's twin, who has a bad reputation, is impersonating his friend. But, who is alive and who is dead, and who is impersonating whom? The story has enough twists and turns to keep you guessing.

The 1st person narrator was confused as to who the other people were. The confusion caused by identical twins was hard to believe and difficult to follow. Nevertheless this was not as 'dark' a story as some I have purchased of late and was not too long to stick with to the end.
