A warehouse off the beaten trace. A warehouse that could be broken into and a smart thief could steal them. Said thief could also plant a device that was capable of accessing the computer files of the companies in the adjoining building. Mei is a computer forensic specialist and the newly appointed head of the department. Automatic weapons from the warehouse break in are being used in random shooting incidents, but the targets and the shooters make no sense . . . a 14 year old student, an old man, a woman who shoots only herself? The only lead the police have is the computer found a the crime scene. Mei and her team search for clues and hope they are fast enough to find the weapons before more people are harmed.After a slow start the pace picks up and you are caught up in trying to figure out who the mastermind is. Mei is targeted. There is a drive by shooting at her house and she is drugged and someone tries to kidnap her. I was totally surprised when the identity of the person behind the robbery and shootings is unveiled.

The characters in Interference are wonderfully drawn, from incidental players to the protagonist. Mei is an excellent addition to the Rookie Club. She grows through the story from a timid woman to a strong police officer. And we get a glimpse of the struggles a modern Chinese-American woman might have between personal fulfillment and cultural and family demands. The author does a great job of weaving the personal and the professional story lines together. And this mystery is complex! So the ending is even more powerful. I look forward to the next Rookie Club installment.
