About the Author Edward Cline is the author of two detective series and one suspense series, in addition to a six-title collection of his political and cultural columns. Silver Screens is the eighth in his series featuring Cyrus Skeen, a private detective in 1920's and 1930’s San Francisco. A second detective series features Chess Hanrahan, in modern times, another private eye who specializes in solving moral paradoxes and the murders behind them. Cline has also written Sparrowhawk, a popular six-title historical series of novels set in England and Virginia in the pre-Revolutionary period. His articles and reviews have been published in The Wall Street Journal, Publishers Weekly, the Colonial Williamsburg Journal, and Marine Corps League, and numerous other print publications. His political, critical, and cultural columns can be found on the weblogs of Rule of Reason, Capitalism Magazine, Family Security Matters and other venues. An exceptionally pleasant view of exceptionally normal peoples in an exceptionally normal country By Rostislav This time, being finally used to high quality of Cyrus Skeen mysteries, I’m giving all my five stars not so to a purely detective thrill as to a thrill of the book’s general atmosphere. Of course, some may argue that there is nothing thrilling about it: the atmosphere of the “Screens” seems to be quite a normal one. I think, however, that exactly this normalcy makes the book so wonderful to read – thanks to it my acquaintance with the new Skeen mystery was sheer pleasure! I guess that I owed a good part of this pleasure to the refreshing feeling of contrast between Cyrus Skeen’s surroundings and those of his modern colleagues. As we witness, even the most famous whistleblowers of today, whistling with all their might from Washington to Moscow, may hardly boast of results which could beat this simple phrase from the book: “On Tuesday both houses of the state legislature, reacting to the public furor over machinations, voted to deny the referendum”. In 1930 such an outcome was rather banal. In our century (though its machinations are no less omnipresent than in the previous one), skillful investigations never bring that ripe fruits that rapidly. It’s not the detectives’ fault at all. Should Mr. Skeen decide to resettle into 2015, his great skills would be at once paralyzed by brakes like politcorrectness, party unity, media policy, public passivity, progressive thinking etc. His hard work would be certainly rewarded with a thick layer of the labels, which are so sadly typical for the general atmosphere of our days - “bigot”, “reactionary”, “racist”, “hater”, “smoker” and so on. My term “general atmosphere” isn’t limited by political specifics only: no, the normalcy of the Skeen’s era looks truly all-embracing in this book, be it relations within a family, within a newsroom or, say, within a police HQ. Well, of course there are always some weird criminal types lurking around in their high hopes to outwit honest Americans (Mr. Skeen including) in Edward Cline’s mysteries, but then his society of honest Americans is perfectly normal, perfectly healthy and absolutely not weird - which helps them to support the worthy efforts of Mr. Skeen in the most efficient way. Thus, as I’ve already said, it’s a sheer 5-stars pleasure to remain within this fine company of normal healthy peoples until the very last page. I sincerely hope that my impressions would be shared by many future readers of the “Silver Screens” – good books and good readers do deserve each other!

Actually, most of the time it's 1930s San Francisco, and still nothing is what it seems. Intreprid private detective Cyrus Skeen is bewildered to find himself pranked by a fake Hollywood producer proposing to use tales of Skeen's colorful career for a fake movie production. Rejection by Skeen of this bizarre offer is followed by fake newspaper stories of fake studio negotiations, the arrival of a femme fatale of uncommonly predatory persistence, and the murder of one of Skeen's closest friends. But the devils are in the details, and Skeen brings all his skills to bear on separating the facts from the maze of fantasy and fiction to uncover the political skullduggery that lurks beneath. But this is Hollywod, folks, which means there's one more surprise lurking in wait before before that final reel comes to The End.

You won't want to miss his eighth exploit where he goes behind the scenes and exposes Hollywood's ties to politics and all the dirt they share. In "Silver Screens not only do the bad guys get their just desserts, Skeen, the brainy detective discovers the fundamental ideas that motivate their behavior---behavior hidden under all the glitz and glamour that can only be dampened by Skeen's astute detective work and honest humor.
