Top-class Thriller By Jak I read quite a lot of thrillers and am sometimes delighted to find that I have come across a gem of a book by an author I have not previously read.This was the case with Derek Thompson's "Standpoint," a real beauty of a good read, and it set me to thinking what it is about some thrillers that makes me like them so much. Not sure I can pin it down completely, but it seems to require all or most of the following ingredients:* Plausibility, particularly of the plot, but characters need to be believable too, and three-dimensional, not cardboard cut-outs.* Novelty: a plot that feels new rather than a remake of something I easily recognize.* Tension: a predicament or problem that seems unresolvable and if not sorted out threatens serious harm to people or society.* A solution that is believable and satisfying even though it is not easily predictable and perhaps has serious costs - not a simple "happy ending."* Interesting and plausible places."Standpoint" checks all these boxes with its tale of a fascinating conspiracy. Plenty of tension, gripping plot, interesting characters - it is among the best thrillers I have come across in quite a while.

The storyline is compelling and the characters are deep with many levels of complexity which indicates that the author has an in depth knowledge of the human psyche. The dialogue is sparkling and witty with amusing one liners sprinkled throughout. The character of Thomas is very ordinary and a little seedy and is somewhat reminiscent of the erstwhile George Smiley. The plot is multi layered with twists and turns at every point and one is never too sure where one is going to end up.All in all, this book is a jolly good read for anyone who enjoys a thriller that will keep them hooked from start to finish.

By Sherry Scales Less than a half hour into the book, my heart is racing and I don’t want to put it down! His writing style, to make you feel love, terror and heartbreak on the same page, is a true gift. I love some of the old characters coming back, and the surprise twist of wondering if they really are the people you have come to know and trust, or do they too have secrets like Donovan Nash? The suspense of the erupting volcano, heartless kidnappers, and the second guessing of characters along with feeling the love Donovan has for those near and dear to him, keeps you wanting to turn the next page to see what happens next. I totally urge everyone to read all his books!

By Amazon Customer The plot is jump-started right from the beginning, so get ready for another fast-paced ride! Donlay’s characters keep getting better and he continues to do an amazing job blending Donovan Nash’s mysterious past with his intriguing present. I would recommend this book to everyone. Captivating from the beginning to the end.

Definitely lived up to its anticipation! The novel continues following the character Donovan Nash into his next high thrilling adventure. Set in the Guatemalan rugged country, centered around an awakening volcano, Donovan has to face his fears from the past to fulfill his future. Philip Donlay writes this saga with such skill, that it is impossible to not turn the next page. The reader is given the sense of traveling right along the adventure with graphic descriptions of scenery, filled with the excitement of being in the shadow of the monstrous volcano, and living Donovan's life right alongside he and his loved ones in danger.

Maya has been training at the top secret camp for the Mossad and is finally assigned her first mission in Dhaka, Bangladesh. She feels the anticipation of the assignment and is also glad to be back in the field. Her superior, Uri, tells her about the current mission which doesn't sound too difficult for her. The mission changes in a heartbeat after a discovery of a terrorist plot. Maya's mantra appears to be to 'err on the side of expediency' which works in her favor numerous times. And, secrecy is essential to survival.A mix of characters like no others abound in this novel. The reader will be transported to Siberia, Thailand, France, England, Dubai (UAE) and India to name a few. And, yes there is a connection between all of them. The threads are sometimes miniscule but when tied together the whole picture emerges.The manner in which the author delves into the mindsets of the terrorists is without equal. Their ideology is motivation; money fuels this motivation and let us not forget the concept of 'Paradise and 72 virgins'! Also, the fact that the terrorists think of themselves as freedom fighters is mind boggling.This is an incredible fast paced read that is filled with one twist and turn after another. A thrill a page for sure and it will keep you on the edge of your seat while reading it. A compelling and captivating read that is filled with suspense along the route traveled by Maya. She has that inherent ability to thwart a terrorist - and her Mossad training has honed her ability razor sharp.Anxiously awaiting the next one in this series. Most highly recommended for the captivating and action packed read.

I am a huge fan of the Jet series and I'm glad you went back to explain the history and you probably can squeeze 1 or 2 more books to expand on her background. I think the characters of Matt and Jet are ready to take it to another level and you're close to getting ready to prepare for the future development of the characters. I think a good idea is to start teaching Hannah martial arts and parkour then you can add additional excitement and continue the characters and develop some interesting ways to continue the series.

An exceptionally pleasant view of exceptionally normal peoples in an exceptionally normal country By Rostislav This time, being finally used to high quality of Cyrus Skeen mysteries, I’m giving all my five stars not so to a purely detective thrill as to a thrill of the book’s general atmosphere. Of course, some may argue that there is nothing thrilling about it: the atmosphere of the “Screens” seems to be quite a normal one. I think, however, that exactly this normalcy makes the book so wonderful to read – thanks to it my acquaintance with the new Skeen mystery was sheer pleasure! I guess that I owed a good part of this pleasure to the refreshing feeling of contrast between Cyrus Skeen’s surroundings and those of his modern colleagues. As we witness, even the most famous whistleblowers of today, whistling with all their might from Washington to Moscow, may hardly boast of results which could beat this simple phrase from the book: “On Tuesday both houses of the state legislature, reacting to the public furor over machinations, voted to deny the referendum”. In 1930 such an outcome was rather banal. In our century (though its machinations are no less omnipresent than in the previous one), skillful investigations never bring that ripe fruits that rapidly. It’s not the detectives’ fault at all. Should Mr. Skeen decide to resettle into 2015, his great skills would be at once paralyzed by brakes like politcorrectness, party unity, media policy, public passivity, progressive thinking etc. His hard work would be certainly rewarded with a thick layer of the labels, which are so sadly typical for the general atmosphere of our days - “bigot”, “reactionary”, “racist”, “hater”, “smoker” and so on. My term “general atmosphere” isn’t limited by political specifics only: no, the normalcy of the Skeen’s era looks truly all-embracing in this book, be it relations within a family, within a newsroom or, say, within a police HQ. Well, of course there are always some weird criminal types lurking around in their high hopes to outwit honest Americans (Mr. Skeen including) in Edward Cline’s mysteries, but then his society of honest Americans is perfectly normal, perfectly healthy and absolutely not weird - which helps them to support the worthy efforts of Mr. Skeen in the most efficient way. Thus, as I’ve already said, it’s a sheer 5-stars pleasure to remain within this fine company of normal healthy peoples until the very last page. I sincerely hope that my impressions would be shared by many future readers of the “Silver Screens” – good books and good readers do deserve each other!

I really like this writer By Kindle Customer As with her prior books, I found myself laughing hysterically at some of the dialogue.Amusing plot, a little too convoluted and unrealistic, but my big beef, I don't like it when the story carries into another book which won't come out anytime soon. I like a beginning, a middle and an end, all in one book. This ended with way too many questions

That being said, this book was not quite as easy to get into. I did enjoy reading it and laughed out loud throughout the entire book. The ending was a bit disappointing. I prefer to read a book that concludes the story line. I would still recommend the read. If you haven't read her previous titles, make sure to check them out. You will LOVE them!

She has finally finished her book, and has decided to take up teaching and leave the investigative reporting to those who really want the lifestyle it entails. But, before she goes her boss is making her go on one last assignment. She is to investigate "something strange" that is going on at an adults only club in the Caribbean. Not only that but she needs to either find her own man to accompany her or take the office geek. She would love to take Cole, her hot neighbor, but since she recently propositioned him and was turned down she is thinking that is not such a good idea.Cole has a few things that he needs to hide and not just personal relationship demons. He has a furrier side that he is afraid of Harley seeing. But, when he turned her down a couple of weeks ago he knows it was a mistake. Now all he can think about is going with her on her "undercover" assignment so he can get her undercover.When she finally gives in and accepts she is confused about his intentions. But, she decides that not only is there something going on at the resort but that they are going to hook up even if it is just for this assignment. What will happen though when Harley finds out more than she expected about Cole and the other vacationers?By the Light of the Moon is a shapeshifting romance where the shapeshifting part sneaks up on you and enhances the story rather than detracts from it. I love how the neighbors have been attracted to each other forever but Cole is reluctant, mostly due to keeping his heart safe, or so he thinks. This story also have me thinking twice about wandering down the pathways when on vacation in the Caribbean, he he. I found this latest story by Ms. Somers to be well worth my time and hot enough to live up to the Caribbean setting where most of the book takes place in. In order to investigate strange goings on at an exclusive resort she'll need a plus one, an who better than her best friend and next door neighbour. The problem is that neither her neighboour nor the resort are exactly what they seem. Finding out the truth could change her relationship with Cole forever ... if it doesn't cost her her life.By the Light of the Moon is a fast paced romantic mystery with love scenes as hot as it's exotic location.A well written novella with lots of action and a compelling cast of characters. Perfect for a summer afternoon.

Entertaining but shallow... like candy floss By irene What I liked about this is that Cole and Harley have lived across the hall from each other for three years and been friends for nearly that long. It's not one of those shifter stories where the shifter sees the woman and instantly knows she's his mate. Cole has taken the time to get to know Harley, so although he's sexually attracted to her, he also really likes the woman she is.What I didn't like is that he blows hot and cold, giving her mixed signals because he's fighting himself, and the reason why he's fighting himself isn't very clearly spelt out. I mean, if he must be torn inside, let him be agonizing over his choice and let us feel his emotions. But we don't see him doing that.What I couldn't understand is exactly why Reginald contacted Harley's boss about possible illegal activities at the resort. What was Reginald trying to achieve by doing that? Why tip off a magazine about a possible story on the island when all the werewolves (presumably including Reginald) want to keep non-weres off the island to prevent anyone else from finding out about the existence of their kind? This was never explained.The story is okay for light entertainment but I was a little disappointed because I felt with just a little bit more development and thought put into the plot, it could have become so much more.

13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Lots of different designs By D. Griggs I went to Michaels yesterday and picked this book out of about 25 different books on mandalas and tangles. Paid full price, could not use a coupon and decided to check the cost here. Much better price here, wish I'd waited. The book contains mandalas, flowers, and animals. Designs are printed on only one side with perforated edges. I really like the spiral binding because I will be printing the designs to use for other art projects, painting and woodburning.

A fun coloring book By Laura de Leon This is a 4.5 star book-- I absolutely love it, but also have some problems with it.The pros:The designs are whimsical and fun, with enough crazy details to keep the pressure of trying to make a picture realistic away.The spiral binding makes the book much easier to handle, staying open on the one page being worked on.The paper is very nice. It handles various mediums well, with no bleed through.The cons:There are very few designs that can be described as Mandalas.The designs are very similar, with the details being consistent through them.Gel pens smear easily. They dry slowly, and the large pages make it hard not to come in contact with areas that have been worked on earlier.I absolutely would buy this book again, and will probably buy more by the same illustrator.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Misleading Title, but nice designs By Heather This book has a lot of nice designs, but they are not mandalas. The title is rather misleading in that aspect. The artist is talented and has a very specific style that she uses in each coloring page. That style is exemplified on the cover page. There are lots of small circles to color in on each page and most pages have sections on lined areas to color as well. I love that the pages are perforated for removal and that the book is spiral bound, so it will lay nearly flat for coloring if you don't want to remove the pages. The pages are all one sided, with a cute quote on the back and an area where you could write something down if you felt so inclined. The paper is thick enough, but I wish it had a bit more tooth for colored pencils.

Five Stars By josephjpatchen This novelette is an extension of the short story published in the collection titled JUST SO YOU KNOW I’M NOT DEAD in 2014; a collection this reviewer praised at lurid-lit.com.I fell in love with the Moby Dick / Lovecraft inspired tale in its shorter form. I found the first H. P. homage to be creative, modern, gritty and emotional. It was the story of a father’s love for his son and the revenge he seeks. So I wondered as I opened this telling, how can one improve on something so tight, so complete and so very well crafted?I mean really.Well, we are talking Anonymous-9 so think in terms of another short story retold longer; think Ray Bradbury’s “The Fireman” and “Fahrenheit 451”.This novelette is a classic. This tale is even creepier than its predecessor making it more Lovecraftian and a greater homage to the legendary scribe. This tale is even more suspenseful making it an instant page turner that can be read just as quickly and as “addict-fully” as the original.The tale is stouter, multi-tentacled and multi-layered. While we still get to the climax between our hero and the Great God, we get there from a different angle and find their throw-down carries much more at stake and perhaps this battle is a mere skirmish leaving nothing resolved for the moment.And yet there is an indication this may be a dream.The story brilliantly walks that line much the way Lovecraft himself scribbled. Worlds in paralleled collision that’s what we see. In other words, the story is deep, hence the title; ‘smirk’, ‘smirk’…..But it’s not that simple. And this telling and re-telling is much more complex beyond the creative plot. True this is a whale of a great tale and before I implore you to buy this book, let us delve deeper into the inspiring nightmare.This is a bit of a departure for this column but is long overdue, especially with George Orwell’s musings to be proven correct; all of course, under the guise of ‘fairness and freedom’. So please understand that the views expressed are mine solely and well, not so solely; the views expressed are that of Anonymous-9 and mine following a discussion as to the meaning of her amazing tale. Views I should say I thought I sensed but was hesitant to expand on.Whether you wish to acknowledge it or not; we live in a world inhabited, run, choreographed and enforced by a real live Cthulhu. Our monster is more institutional and more formal. It knows no sex, no state of origin and no political party. It is a leviathan but no less tentacled than a societal convention and mythos created by our own government out of an ignorance of ideas.DREAMING DEEP is a story set against an institutional backdrop where the idea of the monster is not only ridiculed but considered dangerous enough for freedom to be lost. It is in the best interest for the protagonist to cease having such ‘dreams’ so that his reality is altered by thought police in white coats until he complies. The interaction and regulation of what is socially acceptable rather than what is real carries the day for an aloof ruling class that knows better than one’s eyes.A muse doesn’t have to be pretty with long flowing hair, supple lips and doe eyes. A muse needs to incite; a muse needs to awaken ideas within an artist and beckon an artist to bravely present those ideas in an entertaining way.This book is not only entertaining but it is thought provoking and brave. This book is something literature and our culture have sorely missed.Buy this book.

By Mathew Tavendale I'm not sure what's more sinister - the depths of the ocean or the depths of the mind!When you go for a swim in the sea you try not to think about all the other creatures you're sharing the water with. You know they are in there and you simply hope that they don't brush past your leg. Your mind can play tricks on you when you don't know what's swimming around below you. Anxiety builds and before long, panic can set in - that growing panic, and what it can do to your mind, is brilliantly captured in this new effort from Anonymous9 aka Elaine Ash.The terror that exists in this story comes from the heartfelt and tragic search a Father undertakes for his missing child. Building characters like these, and forming that sense of darkness in so few pages can't be easy as the author has made it look. This is a quick read and is one of those books that makes you hug your kids that little bit tighter.I knew of HP Lovecraft prior to reading this but wasn't really familiar with his work. At the end of this novella I was left wanting to know more of Lovecarft and was definitely left hanging for more Anonymous9. You'll want to read this with the lights on, and probably as far away from the ocean as you can get!

Lovecraft (who I’ve never read, although I at least recognize the name) will pick up on subtle things in Dreaming Deep that flew right past me. It was a good read, regardless. As the author explains in an explanation at the book’s conclusion, it started as a short story in a collection that was a tribute to Lovecraft (later available as a standalone short called Just So You Know I’m Not Dead) and now expanded to novelette length.Although it has horrific elements, as you’d expect due to the Lovecraft-ian origin, Dreaming Deep reads like a thriller as much as a typical horror story. I found it an intriguing thought experiment. I don’t want to give details not in the book description, so need to be vague, but consider the possibility that things happen to you which if you talk about them would be interpreted as a sign that you’re insane. However, they’re really happening. How do you react? How do you deal with it? A short, fast-paced read that comes to a satisfying conclusion, while setting up for more to come.**Originally written for "Books and Pals" book blog. May have received a free review copy. **
