Do you believe in life after death? Too often I find that the subject of death is addressed with goofy speculation, close-minded stubbornness, or outright fear and avoidance. So let's bypass the "Death for Dummies" approach and take a deeper intellectual look at death to better understand the important role it plays in our lives... and especially what it can teach us about how to live. As far as our human bodies are concerned, death eventually captures all of us. As far as I can tell, no human being has yet managed to live forever. Even if we evolve new silicon bodies for ourselves and find a way to transfer our minds into them, there's no reason to believe those bodies will be immortal either (even with frequent upgrades). We may be able to delay death, perhaps even for a very long time, but eventually our physical existence will end at some point. Forever is too long for us to last as physical beings. No backup system is foolproof, especially when its opponent is the infinity of time. On average more than 150,000 people die every day on this planet. That's 2 people per second. Over a million corpses a week. And this is "normal" for planet earth. Does this fact help you get some perspective on the scope of various tragedies? If 3000 people get wiped out in a single stroke, that's still only 2% of one day's total... hardly significant from a cosmic point of view. And here's the worst part. You don't even know when you'll die (unless you're reading this right before committing suicide, in which case I'd better keep writing). But my guess is that you don't have an item labeled "die" on your to do list or in your tickler file. So how comfortable do you feel with the idea that today might be your last day alive? For 150,000 people today, that's about to become the reality, so if you happen to be among them, you'll have plenty of company. I wonder how many of those people feel prepared for what awaits them. What do we really know about what happens after death?

I've questioned why we living through life's challenges isn't taught through the power of love in our thoughts By Bob I've struggled with finding answers about what life's true intent is and why we have to pass through difficult challenges to reach toward death each day. God is a reference word we use to understand the concept of some sort of loving creator of it all but death seems to be associated with the dark knight, evil, sorrow, pain. I've questioned why we living through life's challenges isn't taught through the power of love in our thoughts, actions, deeds, mindset instead of via trauma, hurt, pain, suffering, cloudy days, dark nights, broken hearts. Indeed life's struggles are temporary and death puts an end to the struggle. Steve's logic drew his conclusions about what death offers us. I had hoped my Catholic upbringing would make sense out of life and give reason to death but it didn't. Heaven was the answer for good works. Hell was the gateway from death for those who spearheaded bad works. Period. That was not a good way to go through life. Nonetheless, it forced me to seek out any and all information that might shed light on what life and death was all about. Then I ready Dr. Michael Newton's books and the world opened up to me with a floodgate of answers. "Journey of Souls", "Destiny of Soul" answered ALL my questions, concerns, fears and the 'why me' of my existence about life and death. I would recommend that Steve Pavlina read those books only because they will give him a vast amount of ammo for his rationale about this book and what transpires when we die. I now trust the things that affect me in this life as having purpose and reason. I now don't face death with fear or worry. This journey is helping me better my true self so all that life throws at me now has meaning even if I can't digest it at the moment of experience. I trust life is helping me understand things I would not otherwise have known and when death arrives, I will settle kindly into knowing I've gone through a lot to edify my being in the best of ways. Thanks Steve for your insight and thanks Dr. Michael Newton for helping me have more purpose for this existence full of challenges. Life is good and with Adele singing 'Hello' what more could any soul want! :)

By Dan - Cleveland, Ohio Outstanding, and I have read much material on this subject. This is a short, clear, well reasoned approach to the topic of life after death. From preparing for your transition if you think "you" continues after death, to some advice on what to do if you don't, to many points to consider for the ambivalent. The spectrum of rabid believer to atheist to everyone somewhere in between, all will get useful insights to chew on from this work. I do not agree with every one of Steve' conclusions, but his main premise and the majority of this work has the unmistakeable ring of truth.

The author spends most of his time discussing if there is some sort of existance after we pass on or not. There is no way of knowing, so absolutely no point in discussing it.He does say to live life to its fullest but you should do that one way or another.
