In the 21st Century email has changed from a handy and convenient business tool to an overused, overworked time-consuming burden. For many, checking and managing email begins with waking and extends through breakfast, dominates the working day in 20 minute slices, distracts from meetings, interrupts lunch and takes time away from their families and friends in so-called social time. I am the Chief Operating Officer of a $40m freight management company and over the last two years have launched a tech startup associated with that role. I receive, on average 75 emails per day from hundreds of suppliers, clients, co-workers and other contacts. I spend less than 30 minutes a day on email and do not check my email outside business hours or on weekends unless there is an especially urgent need to deal with a particular situation. On coach.me I have helped hundreds of people resolve their email management challenges, achieve Inbox Zero and control email. This book will help you get out of your inbox and into more productive work. You'll be more effective and efficient, and feel that sense of freedom and control that comes with using email as a tool to get things done, rather than allowing others to use it as a tool to decide what you should do with your time. Using tools and strategies I've synthesised, borrowed, stolen from others and developed over the last ten years, the daily steps in this book are simple but will have a significant impact. These strategies worked for me, have worked for others and will work for you. Follow the 21 steps in this book and spend less than 40 minutes a day - in total - in your inbox. You will achieve Inbox Zero and control email.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. excellent coach, low price, priceless habit By Katherine G. Ward Mr. Hughes is an Australian logistics executive and digital coach, and both those roles make this short e-book worthwhile. In bite-size daily chunks, he gives simple (but not easy!) instructions to gradually escape email bondage at work.I found the Australian influence charming, with “straightaway”, “whilst”, and “good on you” sprinkled throughout. Two extra-helpful tips were Don’t File in Folders (now that search software is so good it’s a waste of time) and Turn Off Auto-Fetch (save phone battery life by only fetching email when you open the app).In the Day 5 micro-chapter, you are asked to not check email before breakfast. On Day 10, this is extended to not before 10am. One of the most difficult tasks is retraining co-workers how to communicate with you, and the author spends much of the second half of the book giving detailed guidance on setting new expectations. Recurring advice: “Be kind.”The only negative for me (and it’s tiny) was that a couple of lessons in the second week ask you to tell your correspondents you’ve been working on changing email habits for 3 weeks. (I think this is a leftover from the original 28-day plan with weekends off.)My favorite part was the three benefits of waiting to respond to email.1. Helps to change expectations and train correspondents to wait on non-urgent messages (if it’s truly urgent, you instruct them to call you)2. Many situations resolve themselves without your involvement3. Avoid emotional response (this one is GOLD)There’s a great Tim Ferriss quote in The Four Hour Work Week: “to enjoy life, you do need to control your time”. When I got to Day 14, I saw that Mr. Hughes was also influenced by that book. Email is still a terrific business tool, but ONLY if used properly. I recommend “21 Days To Inbox Zero: control email” highly; please let it help you learn to control your time AND enjoy life!
