I read a lot of PI stories and this one was truly unique. The inexperienced detective role is usually reserved for female leads, and was very well done. I enjoyed seeing a man in this role.Mike Campbell doesn't know what he is getting himself into when Meredith walks into his office and hires him to catch her husbands having an affair. That is the trigger that turns his life into a roller coaster ride- murder, being tailed, fighting with snarky detective Evans, his family being threatened! (This book has it all)I liked the ending that the author chose to give this book, it was totally out of left field, I was definitely rooting for someone else to be the culprit. (I wont say who, so I don't give away any of the plot.)I liked the detail the author gave to Mike's back story, it wasn't just about the case, it made him more believable being divorced, paying alimony/ child support, and his addiction to the strip clubs. He was relatable in the sense that he wasn't perfect, he had problems.I think this book was a perfect intro for a PI series, I would be interested in reading more.I also just wanted to add that I also really like the cover.

Gray Due to my hectic schedule, I’m always attempting to slide in good book in between flights or during my rare times off. I was referred to this novel by a friend of mine who also likes a great PI mystery. After digesting the material, I can easily say that this writer is definitely one I’m going to keep in the kindle. His technique is raw and straightforward; a perfect style for my taste. Also, his characters aren’t just genre caricatures with one dimensional personalities. Oh no, these people are all really fleshed out entities that are sure to allow suspension of disbelief to occur swiftly as you relax into the progressive story. I enjoyed the protagonist Mike Campbell even though there were things about him that were a bit dirty. He’s a bit of deviant with a penchant for hedonism, but in the end his heart and morals are definitely in the right place. The other characters, including Joe, Jack, and Merry are all well done as well.By the end of this novella, I must say that I didn’t see what was coming. Due to my immersion into the crime and mystery world I’m often able to discern the ending early on. Not so here. Another note is that the character Ben was a great addition to the novel and his trajectory was something I definitely didn’t see coming. It’s a unique thing that even from the first person point of view writing, which can sometimes be limiting in perspective, the story is very wide open, leaving a vibrant landscape, broadly designed characters, and deliciously written descriptions that only a real author could attempt. In summation, if you like a great PI novel and haven’t had a good fix in a while, I can’t see you doing any better than this one. Personally, I highly anticipate the next novel in this series so I can go on another adventure with Mike and see what he has waiting for him next. Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long.

It follows the life and investigations of Mike Campbell who has been hired to get the dirt on a possibly cheating husband. The case makes Mike take stock of his own life in the process, which really adds a level of humanity to a character that could easily have just been another macho PI. He reminds me a bit of Sue Grafton's Kinsey Milhone character in her alphabet series in the way he's rounded out like a real person. Newman did a great job in creating a character you get into and want more from so I'm glad this is just the start of what promises to be a first rate series.
