When Emily's elderly customer, Sophia Sarfatti, complains her shoe is uncomfortable--and Emily pries off the heel to investigate --she discovers a stash of precious stones that has the power not only to make her own life uncomfortable--but to end it completely. Someone is using Emily's Place, the fashionista's favorite discount shoe store on New York City's colorful Upper West Side, to traffic in stolen stones, and the list of possible suspects keeps growing. Was it Freddie the Fox, a local kid who sold her a few pair at a really good price because "they happened to have fallen off a truck?" Or was it Italian Mafia--the shoes were imported from Italy--or worse yet, was it the Russian Mafia, expanding their neighborhood fur business? Or could it be some independent entrepreneur? Even Beverly Bernstein, the kindergarten teacher has a yen for treasure like that. Then the annual fund-raising event to help the local public school and other community organizations goes terribly wrong and nobody in the neighborhood will tell Emily's friend Murphy the Cop the truth about anything, because everyone, from SuperMama who takes cre of the brownstone around the corner, to her store manager's dapper boyfriend, Alec le Grand, whose gambling debts have been mounting, to the elderly Italian, known as the "Senator," who visits the sick, have something to hide. But Emily knows that whoever has stashed those stones is going to come back for them, and she begins to worry--big time--not only about herself but about her other customers, whose heels, stuffed with diamonds and rubies, even now might be taking them on a short-cut to the cemetery.

By Judy Weissman "Well-Heeled," Roz Siegel's second volume in the "Emily's Place" mystery series is even funnier and smarter than the first book in the series, "Goody One Shoe." It's also spot-on in reproducing the language of her Upper West Side characters. They are a mixed bag, like the residents of the area the author obviously knows like the back of her hand. I laughed out loud reading it, no mean feat. If you haven't read it yet, get yourself a copy and, while you're at it, buy a new pair of shoes!Judy Weissman

It's an unusual murder mystery that takes place in a well imagined version of the upper West Side with an outlandish cast of characters (including hangers on from both the Russian and Italian Mafia). At the heart of the action is Emily, the owner of Emily's shoes. She loves shoes, mysteries, English lit (especially John Donne), and her quirky neighbors - her real family. When one of her customers is found dead, Emily gets going. She puts on her Sherlock Holmes hat and - dragging along a crew of lovable misfits - determines to find the culprit. She peels away more layers than harbored by a good sized onion and finally sets a trap for the unlikely evil-doer. The climax involves a little bit of Hamlet, a fair amount of farce and guest appearances by a plucky little girl and a socialist Kindergarten teacher who sells a bit of weed on the side. Roz Siegel writes very well. Her dialogue is out standing. I particularly liked her scene at a ratty flea market deep in Russian Mafia land (somewhere very flat and marshy in Brooklyn).

A Funny & Witty Read By Cathi Stoler If Emily’s Place existed in reality on Manhattan’s Upper East Side instead of in fiction on its Upper West Side, I’d certainly be a customer. Not only for the great deals but to chat with Emily herself. Siegel has perfectly captured the spirit of her protagonist and the West Side characters she encounters. When one of them, Sophia Sarfatti, a long time customer, complains about her shoe being uncomfortable, Emily looks into it and finds a fistful of diamonds secreted in the heel. When Sophia turns up dead things begin to heat up. The shoes were a find for Emily who bought them for a good price from a neighborhood kid who got them when they “fell off a truck.” As things progress, Emily scrambles to get back the other pairs she’s sold and becomes involved with the Italian mafia, the Russian mob and several neighborhood pals, any one of whom could be a murderer. All this running around puts her in the path of Murphy the Cop, who she would definitely like to get to know better.
