Concise & informative guide to healing your gut By Susan Schenck Millions of people just in the USA alone suffer from some form of IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), and many if not most of these people don't even know it. If you suffer from chronic gas, bloating, constipation, and/or diarrhea, this book is for you. Almost all of us will have this at some point in our lives due to the SAD (standard American diet) way we eat!I found this book very concise and yet informative even though I already knew a lot of the information. It discusses IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and SIBO (small intestine bacteria overgrowth) as well as the causes, symptoms, risk factors and treatments.What I like is that the author mostly discusses NATURAL treatments, which ALWAYS and in ALL WAYS leave the person healthier. You do NOT want to have a colonectomy and run around with a bag filled with your excrement, do you? I knew of a woman who did that, and after the bag broke while she was ballroom dancing, she was so humiliated that she committed suicide!The biggest factor and treatment for the digestive tract is diet, of course! (It's really a wonder that surgeons think that cutting is the answer. That diet is the cure is just plain COMMON SENSE.) The author discusses the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) and Gut and Psychology Syndrome Diet (GAPS diet), as well as the Paleo diet and FODMAP diet.The book includes bullet points as well as tables, including a list of common vegetables and fruits in the order of preference for this issue.As a health and nutrition author myself, I noted a couple of things I disagreed with. On page 58 she puts seeds on the OK list, but those can be really bad for SIBO and IBS. Also she says that aspartame isn’t a bad idea to use as a sweetener. Though it may be OK for the digestive tract, it really destroys the nervous system and can lead to symptoms such as those found in MS and ALS, as well as epilepsy. I would have liked to have had her discuss sugar alcohols like xylitol and erythritol, and how they feed the bad bacteria in SIBO. It was chewing gum with xylitol that truly messed up my perfectly healthy colon!I would also have loved to have heard more about the author and what inspired her to write this book. It seems obvious that she went on this healing journey herself, and I would have liked to have heard her story.Nonetheless, I recommend this book as it is very concise and informative for anyone who wants a quick overview.Susan Schenck, award-winning author of The Live Food Factor and several other books
