"Blue seas all around. Waves lapping gently at the sides of the raft. We sit in silence amidst the debris of wrappers from the now empty survival pack. Occasionally one of us begins to cry as our minds remind us of all that we've lost. All that we may never see again. Blue skies tease us that it could be a pleasant day if the situation was different. But it's not different. It's not a pleasant day. We've lost our friends, our family, our way, our strength - and if we're not rescued soon, our lives." When a cruise-liner goes down, four strangers find themselves trapped on a life-raft with little chance of survival in this tense, psychological horror from Matt Shaw

Many writers use a lot of detail, exposition, character development, and background to bring their story to life. Where most readers enjoy novels of this type, I like to flit between such books. For every It, there is a twenty page novella that is one thousand pages shorter, but still packs a similar punch. This is the beauty of the written word. Occasionally, you will find a story that is, for want of a better word, ‘bare bones’. This type of story hooks you with likeable characters, a simple plot everyone can understand and a premise that is universally terrifying. If you appeal to the masses, they will all understand. This is your job done, all you need to do is sprinkle it with a decent story…The Big Blue is one such book. Marooned on a life raft, after a particularly nasty cruise liner sinking, four survivors must come to terms with their fatal predicament. Stranded in the ocean, with minimal food and drink and only each other for company, it’s only a matter of time until tempers fray, emotions get the better of them and some nasty home truths are laid bare. Then, the amnesia wears off…Horror can throw monsters at you, werewolves, serial killers and the apocalypse. Yes, all terrifying prospects, but all tinged with fantasy. Unless someone nukes Earth, I doubt Jason is going to knock on your door, introduce you to his werewolf pet and then invite Godzilla round for tea. The Big Blue takes two fears, two primitive, visceral fears shared by humanity as a whole and twists them, tweaks them, and eventually shoves them in your face. Taking place on the life raft – with flashbacks provided to develop our strangers – the story is a slow burner. We know they aren’t going anywhere and with every page turned, their plight becomes more and more desperate. The detail is scarce, yes, but this works wonders. After all, on a life raft, you’re not worried about the details. It’s a battle between you and nature, and we suspect who’s going to win that one. Shaw wisely focuses on the characters and their interaction, which are staggering in their accuracy. The characters are few. Considering this, they have a lot to do. They carry the story, provide insight and the plot through their very eyes. As their supplies, and hope, run out, it’s only a matter of time until something bad happens. The usual nuances are there – one particular Titanic reference brings a brief moment of humour – and the story is very easy to read. However, this story is about the fear. We all fear drowning, we all fear being helpless. The premise of this book could actually happen. Every human on the planet, in theory, could connect with this story. Being stranded at sea is no one’s idea of a holiday, let alone a potential way to die slowly. As the story rumbles to its conclusion, your heart will be in your mouth, wondering how or if our characters will survive. It’s this basic underlying tone that makes The Big Blue what is it, a very satisfying psychological horror. Proof, once more, that Matt has brains as well as splatter when it comes to his work.Five stars? Of course. The Big Blue is a simple story, with complex characters and that ever underlying fear. It’s psychological horror 101. Unlike Titanic though, we don’t know how it’s going to end and we have no idea where the characters will take us. Drawing us in with a wonderfully eerie cover and effortless prose from Shaw, this is another fine addition to the author’s collection. One word of warning, if you prefer Jaws to Open Water, gore to brains, you might come away a little disappointed. However, if you can turn off your blood-lust and enjoy the tension instead, you’re in for a treat.

Although it is kind of short, coming in at just over 100 pages, it is a solid story that does a great job of turning the beautiful ocean into a dark, scary place. Four survivors of a cruise ship accident are floating around in the middle of the ocean, awaiting rescue. Is anyone looking for them? Where are the other survivors? This book is very reminiscent of the old Twilight Zone episodes and has a twist ending you won't see coming. The Big Blue, although nowhere near as extreme as many of his other novels, is quite enjoyable and is one you don't want to miss.

By Annabele Four strangers find themselves trapped on a life raft after a horrible storm, strong enough to rip the Cruise Liner they were on apart. With none of the other life rafts in sight they find themselves wondering if they will ever be rescued. * Beth who was on Holiday with her family hopes they are safe on another raft, * Fiona who was working her first major job in one of the many the floating restaurants on board, * The man who can't remember who he is or how he got there after receiving a blow to the head when the Cruise Liner sank, * And finally, Alex the very hostile, angry man man who carried him on board the raft.Watching the aftermath of the sinking Cruise Liner, as each character reflects on their life prior to, and after finding themselves on the life raft, their supplies are limited to a survival pack placed on each life raft, they can only wait and hope for rescue, yet for some reason they are alone, separated from the other survivor's rafts. Will they be found before it's too late? A gripping tale that keeps you reading till the end. You won't want to put it down until the very last page.Characters are well developed, no noticeable typos or errors in sentence structure, the storyline was well thought out. Highly Recommended.
