By Sable Jordan (TL;DR: Buy this book, you won’t regret it.)Once again Monica Leonelle has outdone herself! Nail Your Story is exactly the book for authors looking to 1) Figure out a structure for getting from idea to working outline in a short amount of time, and 2) consolidate and utilize all the information they’ve learned from the many different books on craft in order to turn out book after book consistently and with a deep, connected meaning.Now, it took me longer to write this review than I intended. I meant to write this the day after I finished reading NYS, which was literally a day after its release, but then I read it again, slower, with the goal of completing all of the provided worksheets. (Huge eye-opener, that. I’ll explain later.)What I love about the book is that it gets all my ideas in one place in a really short amount of time. I’ve read tons of books about craft, but it’s difficult sometimes to put the many things I have learned into practice consistently. What NYS does is start you off with the concept and take you all the way through building your story world using a connected theme. You only get the info down that you absolutely need (no more, what does your character like to eat for brunch?) and get the ideas out of your head and onto paper. Perfect for pantsers and plotters alike. For me, a first draft perfectionist who gets stuck a lot, these methods kept me moving. If I got stuck on something or didn’t have a specific plot point already worked out, I was confident knowing I could always come back to it and jump right in once I had the answers. Meanwhile, I was still doing the work to get my plot pulled together. Progress, not perfection.The structure is great not only for getting the plot down, but for building on theme —that elusive glue most writers kind of stumble into at the end of their first draft and then have to go back and fill in on the second (or fiftieth) go round. NYS shows you how to use theme to enhance your story from the outset, and at all of the major plot points and in your character arcs, so your work has a rich, cohesive feel no matter your genre.Monica does mention that she has consolidated the ideas from the craft books she’s read. And I saw instances of that throughout the book. What’s so awesome is that I’ve read many of those same books, or similar ones, so if I happened to get stuck in a worksheet I could just grab the book and get a clearer understanding of what I needed to do. I also really appreciate that there are examples from Monica’s WIPs included. It’s easy to go backward and apply concepts to familiar stories like Harry Potter or The Fault In Our Stars after the fact. But to see Monica use this structure in action was a big help for me.Maybe I should stop calling this a structure, because that makes it sound too rigid. What Monica provides is a flexible tool that can be adjusted to your own liking. For instance, I approach the Goal-motivation-conflict theory a little differently and at a different time than Monica did in her book. No worries. I just worked those out when I needed to (out of order for when she did it) and had no problem going back and finishing up the worksheets I’d skipped.So, here's why reviews so late: I have 10 different book ideas (different genres and lengths) that are in the latter stages of nagging me on a daily basis. I decided to apply Monica’s worksheets to all 10 books at once. That meant starting with worksheet 1: the Relationship between Concept, Premise, and Theme for each of those story ideas. I should note of those 10, two of those book ideas are for two different series (one is a solo book for my current series, the other is a brand new trilogy) one book is a rewrite, and one is a book I’m in the middle of and have been stuck on for years. It took all of 1 day to get all of the concepts down, get the themes down, and get the premises down. I might have accidentally turned two more of those standalones into series as well… minor detail. But the ideas were finally OUT OF MY HEAD.Going at just one worksheet a day I got up to worksheet number 4 (there are 9 relationships total, but I think 12 or more actual worksheets) before the work got too labor-intensive, and I had to scale my list back to five books to tackle this go round. (My current series has a lot of research that I need to implement and don’t yet have, but I do have a good start on what it’s going to be about! Yay!) By day 7 I decided I was going to unofficially do NaNoWriMo, which meant I needed to focus on one book and get the ideas down for that.Instead of taking a book that I was really familiar with, I chose a story that had nothing but a title, two characters, and a piece of a scene, but that was pretty much it. I decided this was the book I was going to really test Monica’s structure on. It took about 14 days instead of nine (because, life) but in two weeks I went from idea to main story arc, and full character arcs for the four main characters.My next step will be to beat out the full plot over the next 7 days (see, unofficial NaNo since I’m starting way late). Once I’ve done that I plan to dictate the entire 50,000 words using techniques from Monica’s Dictate Your Book. I’ll also use tactics like the modified Pomodoro method (15 minutes works for me. I can talk a lot in 15 minutes. I’m dictating this review, which is close to 1100 words and took about 10 to 15 minutes.)Overall, NYS is FANTASTIC. An essential tool for writers who, like myself, are really focusing on systematizing and learning productivity hacks. While I have stumbled on most of the concepts myself through the many craft books, seeing it all together in action has been a huge help and a game changer in the way I’ll prep my stories going forward.

If You Want to Write a Novel, This Book Should Be in Your Library By wattsfam In Nail Your Story, Monica Leonelle shares her method for working out the story before she starts writing her first draft. There are plenty of books about writing a novel. What's unique about this book is the way the author makes connections between different layers of story elements. I love the way she connects the dots between the premise, characters, conflicts, theme, and other story components. If you want to write a novel, this book should be in your library.Here are a few extra things points I want to make:It's a quick read. There's no fluff in this book. The chapters are clear, concise, and informative. I'm in the middle of outlining my novel, and can easily apply these suggestions, weaving them in with my regular process.Theme can be tricky to develop and convey in a novel. This book gives specific instructions for how to do this and make sure that the other parts of the story are aligned with your theme.I've heard plenty of people describe what is meant by high concept, but it never really made sense to me. Monica explained it so clearly that I now understand it.Revision: If you've already planned and written a first draft, you can use the suggestions in this book to make sure that you have all the necessary relationships included as you revise.Do yourself, your story, and your future readers a favor, and read this book.

Therefore I was sceptical, that Monica Leonelles new book could bring a new twist to story planning, but the book managed to surprise me. "Nail Your Story" has a fresh view on storytelling and story structure and showed me some aspects I thought I already knew in detail from a new perspective. Highly recommended!
