BUSHWHACKER QUEEN
HELL has no fury like a woman betrayed
Big Tobe Kirkwood was king of the Southern bushwhackers in the Great Smoky Mountains, leading a ragtag army of killers and bandits armed with stolen Yankee repeating rifles.
Hattie June Rose was his backwoods queen, Civil War guerilla royalty terrorizing the dark mountain region. She offered herself to gain Big Tobe’s strength in avenging her father.
Bloodier than Quantrill
Fast and lively and very bloody, Rebel Bushwhacker hits hard and aims for the head, like a smoking revolver in the hands of the wild-eyed bushwhacker chieftain.
Based on true incidents during the War Between the States, the story takes place in the rugged Southern Appalachians where a deadly civil war raged between Rebel partisans and Union loyalists.
It’s the story of a survivor, a sturdy mountain girl named HATTIE JUNE ROSE, who found herself in desperate times during the last year of the Civil War in the remote Smoky Mountain backwoods. Guerillas fought a grim and shadowy war, with brazen raiding, murders, kidnapping and looting quite common.
It’s a tangled story of love and hate, of vengeance sought, of a clever country girl who uses her brains and her body to bend two different men to her will.
She loses her innocence along the way, and at a tender age buries her father and her brother. She trades sex and her native intelligence to the most notorious bushwhacker of them all, the “red-headed butcher,”, for his help in tracking down the Yankees who killed her father.
Til the day her murderous lover betrayed her badly.
Vengeful Hattie June Rose sets Big Tobe up for an ambush that goes badly. He flees to Texas and, after recovering from her wounds, she follows, determined to see his death - or her own.

About the Author Wally Avett is retired from a sales career --- newspaper and billboard advertising, mobile homes, real estate---in the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. He lives in the same little town, sometimes compared to Mayberry, where he was editor of the weekly newspaper in the ‘70’s and town manager in the ‘80’s. “My father was a town-and-country Methodist preacher,” he says. “So I grew up with good story-telling all around me, friends and family.” He met many colorful characters in a lifetime of interviews, heard many stories and they inspire his writing today. “For me, good writing has to be based on truth. It gives the work an authentic ring and makes it believeable. So I write like a granny-woman makes a quilt, producing fiction actually imagined from bits and pieces of raw truth.” He is an avid reader and a gardener, a Sunday School teacher and gospel singer, hunter, fisherman and reluctant handyman. He likes local history, sometimes sells cabins to Florida flatlanders and frequently tells funny stories. His first two novels were published by Belle Books in 2014, MURDER IN CANEY FORK and LAST BIGFOOT IN DIXIE

The history is well examined with a specific aspect of civil war history that is not generally written about. The dialog is very factual and realistic. This book was given to be as a gift and I went out and bought the rest of Avett's works (Last Bigfoot in Dixie, Murder in Caney Fork.) It is based on a real-life incident that I was not aware of. Thus makes it ten-times better then a simple work of fiction. I am always delighted when I find an author I enjoy! We really recommend this book!

Rebel Bushwhacker grabbed me from the get-go simply because no one writes about what happened to the rural folks after the war. Right after Appomattox, during reconstruction, people would not let go of the hatred; starvation, looting, etc. were rampant. Heck, to this day conversations include ‘Rebels’ and ‘Yankees;’ it seems it will always be. Hattie June Rose is a spitfire who devises a plan, using all her womanly wiles, to do what has to be done. She pays the price in more ways than one, but her determination to see it through takes you on one adventure after another in blood, sweat and lots of tears.Wally Avett is a grand storyteller. I have read all his works so far: Last Bigfoot in Dixie and Murder in Caney Fork. Excellent entertainment. I highly recommend all of them.
