Review by Philip J. Hughey "Five Stars * * * * * Well written and great ending." Review by Phoebe Stogstill "Five Stars * * * * * This is undoubtedly the best book I have read in the last ten years. It all depends on what you like, and I like Deep-Southy, American Gothic dramas. If you have ever witnessed sanctimonious church pew warmers going at each other like cats fighting in a closet, and sadly some of us have, you will see why this is such a good read. Even if you don't like Deep-Southy, American Gothic yourself, you will probably like this anyway, for the beautiful way it is written. Mr. Caleb Pirtle has always had a way with words. I highly recommend this page-turner." A small town has calmed itself as a peaceful place to live, until one day its smoldering fires of jealousy and selfish greed turn it into a blazing fire. The people. Their anger and anguish boils deep inside their congregation. In a Presbyterian Church, their preacher is no longer looked upon as a god. Filled with sex, bribery and blackmail, the gossip in the town will condemn his soul. A maddening horror grips the lives of the innocent who become as demonic as the Satan they curse in their nightly prayers. The preacher questions his faith, asking if it can rise above the impact from a woman with one little lie.

Some sins are mortal By Kelly Marshall As a fellow writer, I can appreciate a great simile and a description that puts me in the room with a person I just love to hate. From Little Lies by Caleb Pirtle III: “Max Gordon’s brains had been splattered against the bedroom wall, and to Nathan Locke, the wet stain looked oddly enough like a seeping icon whose pleading eyes had been hallowed out by a shotgun blast.” See what I mean? I got the picture and I just bet you will too. Caleb Pirtle is a master at weaving a story with unforgettable characters and an understanding of human nature that gives real depth to his stories.I thoroughly enjoyed Little Lies. The plot moves along at a good clip and kept me engrossed. I know it’s a good book when I’m sleepy at work the next day because I just couldn’t put the book down. Pirtle captured me as a reader. He has several books on the market and I will be ordering all of them.

It's no lie - excellent entertainment By Christina Carson If Max Gordon hadn't unexpectedly killed himself, the clutch of secrets that seamlessly stitched together the Basilwood Presbyterian Church congregation of Vicksburg, Mississippi would likely never have unraveled. Unfortunately for the Reverend Nathan Locke, a man more shadow than light, and the flock he shepherds, Max Gordon’s death begins exposing lie after lie until the reader realizes how an old, established southern town like Vicksburg, with time on its side, riddled itself with deceits. As the story twists and turns with the feel of a mystery, it also digs deeper into the lives of a curious mix of people, their sordid doings, their lecherous fantasies and their outright treacheries.Writing has been author Pirtle’s life. Educated as a journalist, serving as a reporter, then Southern Living’s travel editor, Pirtle, born and raised in Texas, traveled the Deep South coming to know and enjoy its physical beauty and the idiosyncrasies of the people he met. He has captured both in LITTLE LIES. His phrases linger: “He slipped behind the wheel of his Cadillac as a faint glimmer of lightning cut a tattered seam in the thunderhead that had, at least for the time being, blotted out the sun.” Or, “She was standing beside the front door of the antebellum home, waiting, watching while Susan Heatherly, her face aglow, her smile radiate, paraded up the sidewalk like a high school majorette in search of a band.”Sometimes you’ll be laughing, sometimes shaking your head, but what you won’t be is privy to the lie you least expect until you reach the end. Caleb Pirtle knows how to write a story. To those who know and love his work, that’s no secret and no lie.

Hold tight - the rollercoaster is about to start By Alicia Butcher Ehrhardt Mr. Pirtle MUST know these people - there is no way he could make all this up. Here's the Reverend Locke on the singer in his church: "Nathan Locke could picture the scene behind him without bothering to turn around. John’s head would be thrown back, his round face sweating, his hands clasped tightly together, and his eyes closed in meditation. He was singing How Great Thou Art, but Locke surmised that the young choir director’s mind was on neither God nor Max Gordon. Hell, John Madison was singing about himself."I KNOW a church singer like that. And the portraits of the other characters in this drama are drawn with great and precise detail - townspeople, ladies of the night, bankers - all put together and roiled in a cauldron of small town America. You meet people, get enough of their story to fit them into the larger canvas, and move on, collecting the cast of characters for this drama which keeps you wondering until the very last page: who will win? And what exactly does that mean for this congregation?
