Weight training as a way of improving both health and athletic ability has evolved rapidly in the past 35 years from an unknown and misunderstood activity to its current status as a primary component of physical fitness. About the Author Bob Hoyle began weight training in 1966. He graduated from Harvard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1975 with a degree in Biology. While at Harvard he wrestled and worked as a weight training instructor for the Harvard Department of Athletics. After graduating Bob decided to use his knowledge of weight training to benefit high school athletes. He taught high school biology and coached weightlifting, football and wrestling. In his last year of coaching, his weightlifting team placed 4th in the Florida State High School Championships, and he also had one state champion lifter. Bob competed in bodybuilding and powerlifting contests from 1971-1978. A shoulder injury forced him to give up those sports. He graduated from Capital University Law School in Columbus, Ohio in 1986, and practices law in Bradenton, Florida. Bob published three articles in Iron Man Magazine: “How Much Can You Control,” “A Basic Building Exercise,” and “Try Parallel Bar Dips for Upper Body Development.” Bob lives in Bradenton, Florida, where he enjoys the relaxed Florida lifestyle.

By Brandon Hoyle's lifelong experience with competitive bodybuilding as well as injury has given him a unique perspective on exercise, which centers around "controlling what you lift" rather than "how much you can lift". After years of personal experience, research, and expert medical advice, Hoyle, through this book, is able to share his take on the lifestyle, mindset, and safe exercise techniques needed to reach your lifelong training goals, injury free.Along with the wealth of knowledge contained in the book, I like it because the chapters are organized in a way where you do not have to sit down and read it, cover to cover, in a particular order. Its like a coffee table book - pick it up, flip to a page, and read about an individual topic that does not require a reading of a previous chapter as a prerequisite. Also, the book's audience spans a wide range of readers, from beginner weightlifters to competitive bodybuilders - a must-read.

By TPC911 I bought this book to better understand proper training techniques as a means to improving my overall health and fitness, am really glad I did. It is full of useful insight and antidotes which can be implemented into workouts as as in life, in general. As a former NCAA Division 1 athlete, I have seen first hand the affects of over training as well as improper mechanics/ cheating from using too much weight to properly control the exercise. This book is spot on in it's advice regarding listening to your body and not your ego. I try to implement the advice from this book in may daily life and keep it as a constant reminder that it's not so important how much you lift, but how much you look like you can lift. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to get more out of their workouts.

Hoyle incorporates over forty years of experience going to the gym and of essentially being the guinea pig for the revolutionary idea of working out to show how injury can be avoided and how gains can be maximized.Personally, this book has made me reevaluate my own training regime. I now approach each exercise I do, whether it is deadlifts or squatting or pressing, with more vigilance in order to make sure I do not hurt myself in the process, as Mr. Hoyle has done due to the lack of knowledge in his time. I can only thank him for writing the book and giving athletes like me the knowledge that I may need in order to go one step further in my career.
