Near Occasions of Grace plunges us into the journey of spiritual discovery. Rohr explores the meaning of the Incarnation, the “holiness of sexuality,” the challenge of community, and the future of religious life. He spells out the daily challenges of faith, hope, and charity. Ultimately, he unmasks the demons that frusturate our spiritual quest, and reveals the presence of grace in our everyday human experience.

Earthy Sprirituality By Colin Andrews This was the first book by Richard Rohr that I read a while back & it encouraged me to read more of his works.Rohr brings home the reality of the Incarnation in earthy language & enables the reader to connect with the "human" Christ. The reader cant help but be enthralled by the sheer reality & humaness of Jesus. So different from the portrait many author's paint of the Christ nowadays.Rohr also brings the truth of the initiative of God in phrases like "God is not just an experience of mine, but more rightly,I am an experience in the mind & heart of God." His desription of God as "A trinitarian God is a God in relationship" is brilliant. This book has been on the market for a while & I would to recommend it to anyone who is stuggling to come to grips with the "human" Jesus.

Seeing God in the everyday By Kevin C Near Occasions of Grace deals with many of the issues that we are discussing in my Secular Franciscan formation.Chapter Titles: God's Good News, Conversion, Pure Passion, Community, To Care and Not to Care, A Life Pure and Simple, Near Occasions of Grace and Out of a Prayerful Heartpg. 49 "The Christian life is a matter of becoming who we already are."pg. 53 "We have become a commodity church. We have allowed the Gospel to become something we buy and sell to others, something we use for power and good feeling. We have done to God what we do quite comfortably to one another - use him! Fr. Rohr uses the Trinity as the example of perfect love and that our family is a human model that can only be created, waited for, enjoyed, lost, but never used.Discussing simplicity, Fr. Rohr states that St. Francis' life of poverty was the incarnation continuing in space and time. It was the presence of the Spirit taken absolutely seriously. It was being Jesus more than simply worshiping him.pg. 83 "Francis did not want his friars to preach salvation (although they did that too) as much as he wanted them to be salvation."Fr. Rohr continues stating that you cannot love anyone unless you learn to love everyone. He uses two spiritual disciplines to keep him honest and growing: contemplative prayer and the perspective from the bottom.I enjoyed this book very much. It tackles some of the more challenging issues related to being church and community as well as a grounded Franciscan perspective on simplicty and continuing the work of getting ourselves out of the way so that we can see God at work in our lives.

Near Occasions of Grace By Paul Richardson Another book by Richard Rohr that exceeded my expectations, and I usually have high expectations for Richard Rohr. Well worth reading, and keeping around. We all need to be more aware of the presence of our Creator God around us.

Behind every awful, dangerous decision lurks one evil beast: the Cool.     From politics to the personal, from fashion to food, from the campus to the locker room, the desire to be cool has infected  all aspects of our lives. At its most harmless, it is annoying. At its worst, it is deadly, on a massive scale.  The Cool are the termites of life, infiltrating every nook and cranny and destroying it from within. The Cool report the news, write the scripts, teach our children, run our government—and each day they pass judgment on those who don’t worship at the altar of their coolness.  The cool fawn over terrorists, mock the military, and denigrate employers. They are, in short, awful people. From what we wear and what we eat, to what we smoke and who we poke, pop culture is crafted and manipulated by the cool and, to Greg Gutfeld, that's Not Cool. How do the cool enslave you? By convincing you that: - If you don't agree with them no one will like you. - If you don't follow them you will miss out on life. - If you don't listen to them you will die a lonely loserHow do you vanquish the cool and discover your own true self? Read this book.    In  Not Cool,  Greg Gutfeld, bestselling author of The Joy Of Hate, lays out the battle plan for reclaiming the real American ideal of cool--building businesses, protecting freedom at home and abroad, taking responsibility for your actions, and leaving other people alone to live as they damn well please.  Not Cool fights back against the culture of phonies, elitists, and creeps who want your soul. It’s not a book, it’s a weapon—and one should be armed with it at all times. From the Hardcover edition.

Not Cool: The Hipster Elite and Their War on You, by Greg Gutfeld

Review "Every page has at least one gut buster, lines so ripe you’ll want to recycle them at the next cocktail party." - Jon David Kahn, Breitbart.com    “Not Cool is a wonderful book, but it is also something more. Now that it has joined Gutfeld’s earlier bestseller, The Joy of Hate, a longstanding problem of American writing has sorted itself out….Our only bona fide misanthrope was Ambrose Bierce, and Greg Gutfeld is his heir.”—Florence King, National Review   “Read Greg Gutfeld’s new book to vanquish the uncool “cool,” and with it save the country, while laughing, crying and cursing the whole way through.” –Benjamin Weingarten, The Blaze

About the Author Greg Gutfeld is a cohost of the hit show The Five and the host of Red Eye on the Fox News Channel. He is the author of The Bible of Unspeakable Truths and the New York Times bestseller The Joy of Hate, and he contributes regularly to Breitbart.com.From the Hardcover edition.

That just goes to show you that you should never form an opinion about anything based on friends' comments without learning about the subject on your own. My first real introduction to him occurred when The Five replaced Glenn Beck in Fox's early evening lineup. Gutfeld's participation in The Five proves him to be among the most insightful pundits on the planet. His unique brand of 'punditry' (especially as evidenced through the pages of 'Not Cool') is down-to-earth, common-sense-based observation, often of those people and events that are simply accepted as being 'the norm'. Gutfeld teaches us that 'the norm' is too often imposed upon us rather than being a part of a natural 'evolutionary' process.Greg's commentary is courageous in its refusal to acknowledge politics' sacred cows, and his demeanor in informing us lacks the pomposity of so many others on the right. He has the depth of a Bill Buckley without the verbosity. He talks with us as if he were sitting in our livingroom discussing the sorry state of the world, over a beer. And his candid irreverence is endearing. When I was reading Not Cool in our study (the 'cool' term for what used to be called a 'den'), Gutfeld's quick, dry, sarcastic wit, in virtually every paragraph, had me consistently laughing out loud to the point where my husband yelled in from the living room, 'Are you reading Dave Barry again???'I am tired of being talked down to by both liberals and conservatives alike. Tired of their condescension and arrogance. Gutfeld isn't arrogant. He's frank. And his microscope is accurate and unforgiving ... exactly what the American public needs at this watershed moment in history.

Writing this review will probably be one of the hardest reviews I've written in Amazon. Taken on its surface, Greg takes on just about every form of lunacy, pop culture, crazy Hollywood "stars," crazy dictators, crazy Hollywood talking heads, all of the news networks, several crazy representatives of different cultures which make up our society, fracking, Obamacare, the American society as it stands today, and if I named everything, that would be my review!I cannot tell you how much I laughed at various phrases he uses to describe totally ridiculous things people who should know better say or do throughout his stories. The Chapter on Hugo Chavez nearly made me pass out.I know intelligence when I see it. And from the first day I saw Greg on Red Eye, I knew he was a whole lot smarter than he let on. Greg is that very rare person who has the ability to see through all the BS going on around him, ferret it out, and somehow not only make it make sense, but make sense in a way that make liberals blow flames out of their ears and leave conservatives wondering if he's on their side or not.Nevertheless, his grasp of today's youth, today's average social network surfer, today's COOLness and how upside down society is becoming because of it, is so spot on, it's like he took a million post it notes, somehow put them in order, and actually makes sense how this invasion of the quantity vs. quality social scale came to be. Then, somehow, he uses his snarky wit and crazy/sane verbiage to bring it all together and MAKE SENSE! A dry fact-filled book would sit on a shelf and collect dust.Greg reaches out to today's youngest generation whose parents are so busy working, taking part in social media, keeping the kids busy in after school activities, because THEY are as confused as their parents. Somehow they manage to find down time, Yoga, the Gym, book clubs and possibly the more necessary wine clubs, to get in their free time trying to rest up to do it all over again tomorrow. His comments and additional stories about SO MUCH STUFF COMING IN TODAY are critically relevant. The fact that EVERYTHING has become politicized, making the field much more muddy, makes his effort to let us know COOL is not (or should not be) our ultimate goal in life. As some of us watch things sag, more and more, not seeming to have an engine to run it or a rudder to guide it, it seems like everything depressingly has no direction. Sort of like algebrabraic equations no longer equal anything. He pushes back, pointing out how dumb it is that we are caught in this sad maze of who to blame, what to do, where to go, how to get it, turns it on its head and points his finger at the who, what, where, and why and in very plain and colorful language, accurately puts the blame where it belongs (on us!!! :-0 ). WE make decisions every day that affect our families, our friends, our parents, our children and buy INTO this crazy society that COOL is, indeed, COOL, and we must attain it at any price. Of course, when he says it, over and over again, it is funnier and full of biting wisdom.Greg is asking us to wake up out of our stupor, and perhaps on any Hollywood award night, maybe we should NOT be glued to the empty-headed nonsense going on in the media, and turn it BACK to where it belongs: TOWARD THE FUTURE OF OUR CHILDREN! GET INVOLVED IN POLITICS - HELP BRING BACK ALL THAT WE'VE LOST! DO SOME RESEARCH AND SUPPORT A GOOD CONSERVATIVE ORGANIZATION THAT WOULD PASS THE TEST OF THE GREG GUTFELT INSTITUTE of RATIONAL BRAIN ACTIVITY!! We can do this!!! And Greg is at the head of the line!!Our priorities are hideously twisted, Greg's entire book shouts that out. We MUST read this book carefully to find out HOW, while there is still time left, we break the hold that money, technology, fashion, peeking into other people's lives via reality TV, and ANYTHING Hollywood is trying to sell us in general, has on us, that we check out the Constitution, check out the business pages now and again, and most importantly, get educated on religions, groups of people, those living on assistance, government hand outs, and the most important thing given to us of all: FREEDOM! We live in the best country in the world and we let these false-faced nutballs in the media dictate our lives! Now he is on FOX NEWS NETWORK ON The Five (at 5:00 p.m.Monday through Friday), a brilliant addition to the team, still has his fun on Red Eye (also on FOX News Network), has written his (I think) 2nd full book (Edit: 3/21/2014 - I stand corrected - Dana said today on the Five that this is his SIXTH BOOK - my most humble apologies to the author), is winning the respect of no less than Bob Beckel (not an easy thing for a guy like Greg to do!!), is turning up on Bill O'Reilly, and is on his way to becoming one of the great thinkers of his generation (seriously!).This book has much more meat to it than the last book. I think it could have been cut into four books, with more factoids added to educate the masses to the mess this country is currently wallowing in. Greg Gutfeld is one of those writers who can, in one sentence, cut the lies out of the mouths of (fill in the blank) and tie it up in a bow so funny, you might have to go back and ponder what he said for several days.I don't like my own review, even though I've been at it for two days. I can't catch Greg's amazing ability to cut through all the BS handed to us every day and somehow have it make sense and make it edgy and funny at the same time (funny as in funny rational). So, go out and buy his book. NOW!!!!! His numbers will make him lots o' money, yes. More importantly, it will show the Hollywood COOL and the Washington D.C. COOL and the campus COOL people that we have their number. While Hillary and Obama danced, four of our best men died in Benghazi. Just this week, while they danced again, the Crimea section of the Ukraine was stolen and taken away by Putin. On the international front, things do not look good. On the National front, things don't look good. WAKE UP, AMERICA!! While the cat's been away, the mice have been carting out little pieces of what made this country the exceptional nation it WAS.NOT COOL is one of the finest relevant books on the state of our world today. Greg has the intelligence to pull it all together, the thick skin not to care who he skewers (they deserve it), a vast range of observations and knowledge to pull from, and a slightly self-deprecating way to end it. One thing I know, you will learn much you did not know when you started Not Cool. I will be keeping this one near me as a reference guide to the Not Cool and don't know it crowd!! Five stars for a book well done, Greg Gutfeld! Very, very cool book! No, having heard Greg say today (Edit - 3/21/2014) on The Five that Greg thinks cool is actually evil (in terms of its collective effect on society) - very, very, GOOD book!

90 of 117 people found the following review helpful. Excellence, as usual... By tmi3rd One of the tougher things to do today is to dissect where the fault lines are in culture that have caused American society to fracture as it has. Gutfeld offers his astute analysis in a fashion accessible not only to adults, but to teens and college-age kids who may need it more than the adults do.As the Second Disco Era draws to a close, I look forward to my kids reading this. Without preening moralization, Not Cool points out the self-destructive behavior that has been idyllized in modern American society, and offers refreshingly simple antidotes to it... while pointing the reader to the ultimate coolness in rebellion: individualism.

By Ernie Bilodeau I've known Bob for a bit of time - I knew he was writing a book... I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading - but I was more than a bit surprised. It's an easy read and of course entertaining - but more importantly to me, it was just like sitting down at a pizza joint with Bob - talking about the "good old days".I definitely recommend taking the time to read this over the summer. It's a short read, but a compelling novel of life in Brooklyn, New York in the 1950s. It is fiction, but obviously based on experiences the author is very familiar with.As part of a trilogy, I'll have to wait to find out what happens next with Joey and "the Hitman".

Floating City: A Nicholas Linnear Novel (The Nicholas Linnear Series Book 5), by Eric Van Lustbader

From Publishers Weekly Lustbader fans will herald the coming of this latest adventure in the astonishingly turbulent life of half-Asian, half-Caucasian, all-hero fighting machine Nicholas Linnear. Newcomers to the author's idiosyncratic work, however, may have trouble getting with this sequel to The Kaisho , which not only features the usual heaping doses of violence, sex and Japanese mysticism but requires pages of difficult exposition to recap the story thus far, which hooks on high-tech shenanigans. The novel opens with a trademark example of Lustbader's eroticized violence, as a Vietnam vet in 1983 Burma struggles to maintain his foothold among the nation's drug lords and exacts a deliciously nasty vengeance against a bitter enemy. Leap to the present and Linnear, soon trapped in Saigon's famed underground tunnels with only his " tanjian eye "--some sort of sensory enhancement that is mentioned all too often--to guide and protect him. Meanwhile, back in the U.S., Linnear's old friend, ex-NYPD detective Lew Croaker, is also on the case, unleashing his prosthetic hand, complete with retractable claws and powered by lithium batteries, whenever the occasion arises. And so the wildly improbable but amazingly energetic action goes, from Washington to Tokyo and back to Vietnam, with periodic flashbacks thrown in, as well as a mobster nicknamed "Bad Clams" and a drug-lord named "Rock," until it reaches not a conclusion but a setup for the next Linnear thriller (" So it's not over , Vesper thought. It's just beginning "). This is the kind of novel that fans of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles read when they grow up--and no one does it with more punch than Lustbader. Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Nicholas Linnear is back on a manhunt for the killer of Vincent Tinh, a director in his company, Sate International. At the same time, he is looking for his friend Okami, head of a Japanese underworld clan, who has asked for Linnear's help. Assisted by pal Lew Croaker, Linnear probes the underbelly of Southeast Asia, focusing on the Floating City, a secret empire where Tinh's murderer is hiding and where the key to Okami's trouble lies. In an action-packed finale, Linnear avenges Tinh's death and narrowly escapes a nuclear blast. Full of passages describing Japanese culture and history, this work continues the saga of Linnear, a man as comfortable in the East as he is in the West. The numerous Japanese terms will confound neophyte Lustbader readers, but veteran fans will appreciate this richly detailed, if slow-moving, novel. Public libraries of all sizes will want this best-selling author's latest offering.-- Grant A. Fredericksen, Illinois Prairie Dist. P.L., MetamoraCopyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist What do you get when you mix the Mafia, Yakuza, warlords of the Asian heroin industry, political scandal and economic disaster in Japan, ninjas and meganinjas, corrupt governments, stone killers left over from Vietnam, and even a bit of mysticism and telekinesis? An Eric Lustbader novel. Once again Nicholas Linnear and his private-eye buddy, Lew Croaker, dash around the globe attempting to thwart the murder of the Yakuza boss of bosses and stop the development of a terrible new weapon and a supercartel bent on world domination. Lustbader may have reasoned that borrowing a figurative page from Robert Ludlum, Mario Puzo, Trevanian, Paul Erdmann, Tom Clancy, and every other successful thriller writer of the last two decades is the recipe for best-sellers. Judging by the ubiquity of his books, he's been right, but Floating City isn't compelling. There are too many characters to keep track of and too much over-the-top, mystical-meganinja nonsense. There's also too little mayhem, and what there is is written more flatly than in earlier Linnears. Even so, Lustbader fans will come to the library seeking it, so you better have it. Thomas Gaughan

By A Customer Eric Lustbader writes about the Japanese, their country and their customs like a man very well acquainted with his topic indeed. His descriptive passages crackle with vibrancy. Nicholas Linnear has grown into a hero a bit *too* impressive for my personal tastes--able to manipulate his own life force and massive mega-corporations with casual ease--but still remains the focus of a rip-roaring, high stakes game. This is probably not the best book to start with in either Lustbader's or Linnear's library, but if it's the only one you can find and you have a taste for intrigue, sex, martial arts action and oriental mysticism/politics...do yourself a favor and give it a read.

Another home run for Lustbader By Swordsman FLOATING CITY not only has the best title of any of Lustbader's three dozen other books, but it's also another excellent read, as most of his novels are (nobody bats a thousand). Representing the second volume in a trilogy involving the venerable Nicholas Linnear battling the Yakuza and the Mafia, this novel improves upon its predecessor THE KAISHO, a fine book itself. I started reading reading this immediately after KAISHO.FLOATING CITY starts at a quick pace and maintains that pace till the last page. Lustbader has as little compunction for killing off characters as George R.R. Martin. I've already started SECOND SKIN, the third and final book in this series. After finishing that I'll move straight to DARK HOMECOMING featuring Linnear's friend Lew Croaker, a character as compelling as Linnear. I can't wait.

It's as if the author gets off writing play by play with hot words. A waste of pages.Like watching a 90 minute action movie punctuated with intervals of 5 minute sex scenes. I get it. The hero is super hung, goes all night even after he killed 100 bad guys single handed, and all women want him on the spot. But I think most of us knows what sex is and have done it before. We don't need instructions. We buy action books and love action movies to see the mayhem, car pursuits, fights, etc. So skip the descriptive sex scenes and let the story begin.I might come back later and read the book. But for now, the first parts give me the impression that the book is not going to be good.I'm not a prude and in fact, you can call me a sex addict. But if I want porno, I got porno. And they don't waste any time with actions/adventure scenes.

The statues in the derelict Church of Martyrs were hard to ignore even before they moved. The sculptor had portrayed them in the throes of their gruesome martyrdoms; wrathful jeweled eyes had stalked nervous parishioners from the day the church opened in 1902. Though the church is closed and abandoned, the statues within are not through scaring people. They have fumed in silence for many years, biding their time, waiting for an opportunity to redirect the Catholic Church back to the ideals for which they died such hideous deaths. They require a little assistance, notably from a cynical and reluctant ex-priest, a reformed assassin, an abused woman, a blustery Cleveland cop, a Gypsy priest from the rainforest and, of course, the newly-elected Pope Celestine the Sixth. The statues make a bloody debut into the human world; the mayhem they create in the middle of the night in the darkened ruins of the Church of Martyrs launches the collected cast on a risky undertaking none of them want but can't avoid.

Church of Martyrs, by Pete Fusco

About the Author Pete Fusco is a retired airline pilot living mostly earthbound on Lake Conroe in Texas. The good nuns tasked with hammering his early education into him warned many times that no one would ever pay him for looking out a window and daydreaming, the perfect job description of an airline pilot. Though he has strayed a bit, Pete would not trade his Catholic upbringing nor his Cleveland Italian neighborhood roots for anything, especially considering the many embedded story ideas. He drove airplanes for most of his career, but also spent five years as a reporter and feature writer on the Dayton Daily News in Ohio. He later turned his writing and flying backgrounds into "Moondog's Academy of the Air and Other Disasters," a sort of primer for those considering a future in aviation. In retirement Pete, like his statues, has far too much time on his hands. He has turned that time into "Church of Martyrs."

By Ebienic Eddie, former priest and current sole occupant of the derelict Church of Martyrs in Cleveland is really not sure why he has garnered the attention of any assassin, but he’s grateful the creepy, over realistic statues of famous Church martyrs were there to save him. Now if he could just figure out what they want from him, and how to stay alive and maybe how to keep the pope alive, that would be awesome.I loved the somewhat sacrilegious humor coupled with the healthy skepticism of religion in general, although the Catholic Church was the prime target in this one. I also loved that it was a fast paced globe trotter and the added supernatural aspect, although as a social worker, I was a little frownie at the relationship progression. Still it is a great read, and anyone looking for a quick read should definitely pick this one up.

By Sue in CT The church pictured on the cover of "Church of Martyrs" by Pete Fusco looks innocent enough. It looks like many churches you would see around a small rural town but within the walls is anything but innocence. The setting is actually in Cleveland and the church is closed but in the back of the church in the old convent is the Church of Martyrs Woman's Shelter which just opened and the director is an ex-priest.When the La Mano di Cristo, a secret organization that is small but world wide, kills per orders of the Pope who lived hundreds of years before pay a visit to the Church of Martyrs things get real interesting really fast. The plot thickens with each turn of the page and as the characters develop. Each character is unique with their own personalities that rage from everything from dry humor to animated and bubbly. They are well rounded and believable for the most part. The reason I say this is that I am not sure what a real person would do if faced with these circumstances. Although I think I would do something different from what was done, I really don't know until I am in that position however I do imagine real people may react the same way the characters in the book did. I was able to connect with many of them to varying degree including one of these 'hit men' which of course at the beginning of the book he is the 'bad guy' so basically I wanted to hate him. The one I connected with the most was naturally the main character, Eddie Russo who is the ex-priest and director of the shelter. The pace of the book is fast as the mystery and action are nonstop. Once one of the questions are answered and that mystery is solved, there are always another question that needs an answer and mystery to solve but it always followed a logical direction and never strayed from this. I would say this is a fast and steady pace book because even in the slower part of it (usually when a new character is introduced) it really doesn't slow down all that much. At no point would I say it stalled or was boring in any way especially with the twist that I didn't see coming at the end. What I found delightful is that there were not any 'fillers' in the story. I can not think of even one point in the book where it went off in another direction or concentrated even a page on something that had nothing to do with the story. Mr. Fusco writes direct, meaningful, and effectively. It is what I would call a 'no nonsense' story where each and every page all go toward the goal of telling this story.I thought I should mention that although the book's setting is in an old Catholic church and the main character is an ex-priest, this is not a religious book. In fact, someone without a sense of humor and deep into religion may even find this book offensive to the point of almost being irreligious. There is talk of popes, bishops, and about saints, so knowing what these are is helpful (the 'chain of command' for lack of a better definition, not that you have to know who the pope is, who the bishop is, are who any saints are) although even if you don't know, the author basically explains it so the story still is as enjoyable no matter what, if any, religion you are.I really love the writing style of the Mr. Fusco and totally enjoyed this book.

"Church of Martyrs" has it all - a believable-but-reluctant hero, supernatural unbelievability, and fully-rounded, engaging characters. Mr. Fusco's writing style is tight and to-the-point, yet descriptions and portrayals will have the reader truly immersed in the activities and environments. On several occasions, I was actually fearful of the old church and its miraculous statuary. The villains are all-too-human and I found myself wondering if they were modeled after actual persons (living or dead). The minor characters are gems - from the Pope's best friend to the hero's lovely lady, all exhibit a slightly off-kilter sense of humor and deceivingly logical thinking ability."Church of Martyrs" is irreverent, borderline sacrilegious, cynical, and laugh-out-loud funny, in places. (If you don't have a slightly skewed sense of humor, you may miss out on some of the more facetious comments.) The storyline never deviates; the reader can sense the next direction the plot will take. That being said, the ending is a bit surprising...and delightful. I finished this book in two nights' reading time, simply because I could not put it down. Narratives that include violent actions aren't gory, but you can't help visualizing agony and immense pain. The underlying love story has no graphic sexuality; however, if you read between the lines, you know exactly what is happening in several scenes.I highly recommend this book if you are seeking a diversion or a few moments of entertainment. You will be as 'caught up' in the book as I was, I can almost guarantee it. You may even find yourself reading some characters' comments aloud (as I did!), so that you can actually hear the accent with which Mr. Fusco has so expertly written the dialogue. Enjoy "Church of Martyrs" and be sure to take a look at the author's other book, "Moondog's Academy of the Air." (Trust me, it's nothing like "Church...")

Six years ago in Vienna, terrorists took over a hundred hostages, and the rescue attempt went terribly wrong. The CIA's Vienna station was witness to this tragedy, gathering intel from its sources during those tense hours, assimilating facts from the ground and from an agent on the inside. So when it all went wrong, the question had to be asked: Had their agent been compromised, and how two of the CIA's case officers in Vienna, Henry Pelham and Celia Harrison, were lovers at the time, and on the night of the hostage crisis Celia decided she'd had enough. She left the agency, married and had children, and is now living an ordinary life in the idyllic town of Carmel-by-the-Sea. Henry is still a case officer in Vienna, and has traveled to California to see her one more time, to relive the past, maybe, or to put it behind him once and for all.But neither of them can forget that long-ago question: Had their agent been compromised? If so, how? Each also wonders what role tonight's dinner companion might have played in the way the tragedy unfolded six years ago. All the Old Knives is New York Times bestseller Olen Steinhauer's most intimate, most cerebral, and most shocking novel to date.

All the Old Knives: A Novel, by Olen Steinhauer

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month for March 2015: All the Old Knives has a disarmingly quiet start, but good spy novels are like good spies: they draw you in, earn your trust, and then grab hold with both hands. In Vienna during the mid-2000s Henry and Celia were intelligence agents and lovers who witnessed a terrorist hijacking as it took a shocking turn. Five years later, the two meet over dinner at a restaurant in Carmel-by-the-Sea where Celia now lives as a civilian, to recall the events of the past. As the remembrances overlap with the present moment, tension mounts and questions of who did what to whom, and why, become increasingly urgent. By the last 100 pages Steinhauer’s hook is firmly embedded and it’s hard not to race to the finish. And the ending? I can sum it up in one word--brilliant. – Seira Wilson

Review

“A sneaky little gem... Steinhauer sustains the difficult balancing act of melding a heart-racing espionage plot with a credible dinner table conversation.” ―The New York Times

“A splendid tour de force...without neglecting the turmoil of the geopolitical landscape, the novel focuses more intensely on the equally treacherous landscapes of the human heart.” ―The Washington Post

“It's not news that Olen Steinhauer is among the best contemporary espionage writers, and All the Old Knives confirms it. If you're a fan of intelligent spy novels that don't need much bang-bang, details about ordnance, or people who save the world single-handedly, this one's for you.” ―Seattle Times

“Most of All the Old Knives revolves around Pelham and Favreau's dinner, and the fact that the book moves so swiftly and alluringly is a testament to Steinhauer's skills as an entertainer. He stretches considerable tension across an entire book, rather than a handful of swift scenes, and it's gratifying to watch him do something so daringly retro and contrary to what we've come to expect in a thriller.” ―The Richmond Times-Dispatch

“Terrific standalone thriller...There's great narrative energy in the thrust and counterthrust of the dinner conversation, as well as in the re-creation of the Viennese events; Steinhauer is a very fine writer and an excellent observer of human nature, shrewd about the pleasures and perils of spying.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Masterfully plotted and suspenseful stand-alone...Steinhauer expertly shifts perspectives between the two spies in both their present and past lives, when Henry was a rough-and-tumble field agent and Celia wielded power behind a desk. It's an understatement to say that nothing is as it seems, but even readers well-versed in espionage fiction will be pleasantly surprised by Steinhauer's plot twists and double backs.” ―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“A compelling spy story that takes place at a restaurant table...It delivers intrigue, suspense, and a heart-stopping finale. In his acknowledgments, Steinhauer tells us he wrote it in one month. You'll devour it in one night.” ―Booklist (starred review)

“This genre-bending spy novel takes Hitchcockian suspense to new heights. Over the course of a meal with flashbacks, the eternal questions of trust, loyalty, and authentic love are deftly dissected. Readers drawn to the story of a loving couple trapped in a terrible embrace will be thrilled to follow Henry and Celia's tortured pas de deux.” ―Library Journal (starred review)

Having now finished his newest book, All The Old Knives, my overall feeling is that it is a satisfying, entertaining read but not one I'd recommend you rush out to read. This is because while there was nothing I disliked about it, there was also nothing about it that made me feel that it stands out from other books in the spy novel genre. As a matter of fact, although the two principal characters in All The Old Knives are or were spies, there is nothing about this book that I found to be be particularly thrilling, suspenseful or exciting.Without going into detail about its plot, All The Old Knives is set completely in a restaurant in a Carmel, California in which two ex-lovers meet for dinner. One, Celia, was once a CIA spy and now a wife with a family. The other is Henry, who still works in the world of espionage in Vienna. As they relive their memories (often through flashbacks) of a disastrous terrorist hijacking that took place six years ago, the motive behind their meeting remains obscured -- is it to rekindle their lost romance or to reignite a conspiracy. On the plus side of this plot setting, it enables Steinhauer to once again demonstrate his strong ability to create top-notch fully developed, complex characters who come across as very "real" (albeit not very likable) people. Also, typical of a Steinhauer book, this plot setting allows the author to provide the reader with a very descriptive sense of place, making me feel that I was right there at the dinner table with the Celia and Henry. On the "not so plus" (let's call it "neutral") side , however, the plot setting is also why I ultimately felt that while All The Old Knives is a satisfying book, it had nothing special about it for me to recommend it highly to you. This is because everything in All The Old Knives is revealed through the conversation between the two ex-lovers/spies.There are virtually no actions, thrills or surprises that the reader gets to experience first-hand, and even the twist at the end comes about very passively.I hope this review is helpful in deciding if All The Old Knives is a book you'll want to read.

Disparity Of The Past and Present By prisrob Olen Steinhauer, the author, has been compared to the spymaster novelist John LeCarre, and this novel serves that comparison well. This is the best Spy novel I have read in years. My genre is spy novels/police procedurals/mysteries and in forty years I have read most of them. Olen Steinhauer has aced the match. In the forward, we are told by Steinhauer that while watching the 2010, BBC's, Masterpiece TV show 'The Song of Lunch', the germ for this book emerged. The Song of Lunch written by Christopher Reid, is a narrative poem, telling the story of a publishing editor who has lunch with an old flame in a Soho restaurant. It stars Alan Reichman and Emma Thompson, and I can see those two cast in this novel. This novel would make a superb film.Henry Pelham a CIA Field officer, now stationed behind a European desk has come to Carmel, California, to meet his old flame, Celia Harrison. They were lovers, working as CIA operatives in Vienna, and after a most horrific incident in Vienna, she left him high and dry. Celia was the love of Henry's life, and he could not forget her. Someone from Langley has reopened that forgotten Vienna case, and Henry is here to question Celia about her memories of this case. The story is told in alternating chapters, one by Henry and then Celia. Henry gives most of the behind the scenes work as Celia talks about Vienna. We learn about the people they worked with, and where they are now, five years post Vienna. This is a mesmerizing portrait of two ex-lovers, now come together at cross purposes at times. They lay their lives out for us in small increments. All of this takes place in a restaurant in Carmel, with Henry and Celia and one other patron, the only guests. This is riveting stuff, folks. Every twist and turn reveals a little more, but we are not privy to the entire story until all at once everything comes together. Looking back after the final page, I could uncover the clues more fully as they were laid out. This is the best of a spy novel, to keep us on tenterhooks at all times, and the writing is simply superb. The disparity of the past and present has come home to roost.Highly Recommended. prisrob 12-16-14

27 of 28 people found the following review helpful. Dinner conversation (4.5 stars) By TChris All the Old Knives tells a compelling story. It is a simpler story than the plots found in many spy novels. The central idea is the traditional fare of spy novels -- a mole in the CIA has given information to the enemy and the reader is challenged to discover the mole's identity -- but the focus of this relatively short novel is on just two characters engaged in an intricate dance, probing each other over a quiet dinner. Having cut away the complexity of plot that often attends such stories, Olen Steinhauer is free to focus on the complexity of two primary characters, each of whom is haunted by the past.Information received from a Gitmo prisoner in 2012 suggests that a traitor within the American embassy assisted a terrorist attack at the Vienna airport six years earlier. The improbable accusation sends Henry Pelham scurrying off to interview people who might have relevant information, including Celia Favreau, a former lover who left the CIA and is now married with children. Pelham meets her in Carmel, "a perfect place to live if you want to be someone other than you once were." Pelham is prepared to end her life, if necessary. This sounds like a plot that's been done before but Steinhauer makes it seem fresh. The theme of betrayal is common to books about espionage but the best ones use betrayal to teach a lesson. The lesson here is that betrayal, whether by individuals or governments, will almost always come back around to bite you in the backside. Steinhauer illustrates that lesson in a story that is tight, tense, and convincing. All the Old Knives doesn't have the breadth of the best spy fiction and the ending is a bit weak, but it is nevertheless a worthy read. I would give it 4 1/2 stars if I could.

He wrote ten short novels in the 1970s and early 80s, and is widely recognized as the foremost French crime fiction author of that time. His stories are violent, existentialist explorations of the human condition and French society. Jazz saxophonist and screenwriter, Manchette was also a left-wing activist influenced as much by the writings of the Situationist International as by Dashiell Hammett.

The Gunman (Movie Tie-In Edition) (City Lights Noir), by Jean-Patrick Manchette

From Publishers Weekly A legend in Europe for the spectacularly tight and innovative thrillers he wrote for S‚rie Noire beginning in 1971, Manchette (1942-1995) retired from the field after this tour de force of violence and the absurd appeared in 1981, apparently feeling he had reached the apex of his art. Martin Terrier plans on quitting his career as a paid assassin and marrying his childhood sweetheart, Anne, but his bosses in the gun-for-hire trade refuse to accept his resignation. Terrier's naive expectations that his girlfriend will have chastely waited for him are ridiculous, of course, but no more so than his ex-boss's idea that this human killing machine can be forced to perform one last contract on a visiting politician without profound collateral bloodshed. Terse behaviorist prose-"Terrier drew back a little on his seat and stopped pressing the barrel of the HK4 against the throat of the young man"-drives the narrative relentlessly and even gleefully forward. Absolutely nothing goes as planned, while the hit man knocks off anyone who gets in his way even as Manchette mercilessly (and amusingly) chronicles the impotence unexpectedly plaguing Terrier's love life. For the first time readers can experience in English translation the masterful thriller considered Manchette's finest, proof positive that the French knew what they were talking about when they labeled this sort of novel noir. Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist French hit man Martin Terrier wants to quit the killing-for-francs business and go home to marry his childhood sweetheart. Those in charge want him to assassinate one more person--the Arab sheik Hakim--and, confiscating Terrier's savings, coerce him to do so. Learning that his assignment is actually a setup that will truly be his final mission, Terrier foils the plot just in time, gets his revenge, gets the girl, and starts a new life in the Ardennes. Fin? Non. Terrier's blissful retirement and our happy ending are spoiled by the leftover bullet lodged in his brain and his unsavory new tendency to blabber. His lack of savings forces him to work as a waiter, and his wife, tired of poverty and three-minute coitus, eventually leaves him. Originally published in France in 1981, this taut, fast-paced novel flexes with all the standard noir elements: mysterious motives, a gritty hero, detailed technical descriptions of firearms, and a high corpse-to-page ratio. Its ironic denouement also tempts us to interpret it as a commentary on French politics and on the noir genre itself. Brendan DriscollCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Review "For Manchette and the generation of writers who followed him, the crime novel is no mere entertainment, but a means to strip bare the failures of society, ripping through veils of appearance, deceit, and manipulation to the greed and violence that are the society's true engines."--Boston Globe"There's not a superfluous word or overdone effect . . . one of the last cool, compact and shockingly original crime novels Manchette left as his legacy to modern noir fiction."--New York Times Book Review"This is lean, mean noir fiction that cleverly sends up the tough guy genre while incarnating it perfectly."--Detroit Free Press"Jean-Patrick Manchette's terse prose moves like the swift, almost automatic methods and mannerisms of his protagonist."--The Wall Street Journal"Terse behaviorist prose . . . drives the narrative relentlessly and even gleefully forward. . . . For the first time, readers can experience in English translation the masterful thriller considered Manchette's finest, proof positive that the French knew what they were talking about when they labeled this sort of novel 'noir'."--Publishers Weekly"Manchette is a master of both economy and irony. Brutal and bracing: Terrier's tale fascinates even as it chills."--Kirkus Reviews

Brilliant and Disturbing By A Customer As one reviewer summed it up, this is Dashiel Hammett meets Guy Debord, and it's true; flat, spare prose with a sense of existential nihilism from which there is no escape. Fast, rough, violent reading, told in a matter-of-fact procedural manner. The ending is telegraphed rather obviously, but this is first rate work, and if you're into violent noirs, you should read it. What a film it would make, in the right hands!

Ross French crime writer Manchette's final novel was published in 1981 and now finally appears in English over twenty years later. Unmistakably influenced by Jean-Pierre Melville's brilliant 1967 film "Le Samourai", the story is about Martin, a professional hit man who wants to quit the business and return home to claim his childhood love. However, the mysterious government agency who hires him wants him to do just one last job... Of course this is an old story, and naturally Martin finds it's not so easy to just walk away. Having come from a miserable small town upbringing, he's proven himself in the big bad world and just wants to retire to a quiet beach somewhere with his old girlfriend. But this is the noir world of shattered illusions-as one character puts it, "You're dreaming, there are no more desert islands!" It doesn't take too much reading between the lines to uncover Manchette's larger political metaphor in the story of a kid who hires himself out to do someone else's killing for ten years only to find it's tainted him forever. The book is brutally dark, but if you like the whole nihilist crime thing, it's worth the two hours it takes to read. The lean story unfolds in rapid, flat prose without an ounce of sentimentality and it's not hard to see why Manchette quit writing after this. If your world view is that bleak, there's not a whole lot else to say, is there?

As The Prone Gunman is even better still, it warrants the full five stars. This is what noir is all about - a lean plot and lots of action. Indeed, I started reading the book one night, lost track of the body count, was amazed at the thrills and was shocked to discover I was only on page 48.The plot revolves around a hired killer who is looking to retire and hook back up with the girl he had left behind some years before. Of course, nothing goes as planned. The family of a prior hit is after him, his bosses do not want him to retire and our "hero" himself is simply emotionally unprepared for a normal existence. Added to this is that the characters with whom he interacts are all morally vacuous. A reader will not find any sentimentality in this book. He will, however, find a lot of excitement.
